D420 docking with PR01X port replicator

I have a D420, that is frequently docked into a port replicator, model number PR01X. When the notebook is undocked, but *not* in Stand-by, docking it back into the APR fails to adjust the system's display to the appropriate resolution for the external monitor. The display has to manually be adjusted to the correct resolution.
When the system is put into Stand-by prior to docking though, when it is brought back from Stand-by, the resolution is corrected.
My question is two-fold; is this the appropriate behavior of the user? Should they be putting the notebook into Stand-by before docking? And second, is this the expected result of docking a notebook without putting it into Stand-by?

Thanks!

System seems to be functioning normally.

Resuming from standby, XP detects the change in hardware & uses the "Docked" system profile

Right, so the system will only detect hardware changes when resuming from stand-by? If that's the case, then I'll have to change the end-user's behavior.

My "user" often just closes the lid. My theory was to set the machine to go into stand-by when the lid is closed. Then, when he docks back, it should re-detect the display properly.
