Dell Studio hinge problem

I have a Dell Studio 1737 which is out of warranty.   The hinge on the left side is becoming faulty and is causing the screen to separate from the framework.  It hasn't been abused, in fact it never leaves the house.

I was trying to get Dell to just tell me what they think it would cost to fix it out of warranty but they don't give you any opportunity to even ask the question because the unit is out of warranty.  Will they not let me even ask the question?  Anybody have a similar experience?  Any suggestions?  Seems like they should at least provide some kind of answer to this type of inquiry.

Anything but a mainboard or screen is repaired for a flat $159.

If it's just the hinges, those are about $15.  If it's the hinge mounts, that means the back cover - that's about $50.  Add an hour's labor at a local shop and it'll still be cheaper than sending the system to Dell.

I have 3 of the same computers.  1737.  ALL 3 of mine broke in the exact same location.  Left side hinge.

It is obviously an engineering flaw that Dell won't stand behind.  You can see my post also.

Out of Warranty repair will cost you $160 for the repair.  Dell will send you a box to ship in to them in and instructions on what to include.  Call the service number and push the option for out of warranty help.

It sucks that Dell won't stand behind this issue and fix it.   Good luck with getting it repaired, but that $160 should cover everything unless they've raised their prices in the last few months.

Most of the national chains have centralized repair depots -- Best Buy's is in Nashville near FedEx's world hub.  That's where your system will be sent.

You can buy the parts (www.parts-people.com) and have a local shop install them -- the cost should be an hour's labor.  It won't be much cheaper overall but won't require losing the system for two weeks.

Thanks for the insights.  It looks to me like Dell wants to charge a fee just for starting the repair ticket.  Is that true?  What about having it fixed at someplace local like Best Buy?  I called them and they said it would be $100 - $150 but it would take 2-3 weeks.
