High pitched chirp. From display? CPU?
I recently got an Inspiron 1000. It's just fine, so long as I'm not working in a relatively quite environment.
The problem is that there is an intermitent high-pitched "chirping" type sound (sometimes it is sustained beyond a mere "chirp") that seems to be somehow related to the display. I can't say for sure that it is related to the display, but it reliably occurs when I scroll up or down a web page. At other times, it just randomly comes and goes. If I so much as move the cursor up or down on the page (if I were to hold down the arrow keys) I can actually tell that it is moving by listening to the noises coming from the machine.
It is annoying enough that I am afraid (embarrassed) to use the laptop in my classes at school.
Any ideas what the problem may be? Is this common, or is it some sort of defect? Is the noise, perhaps, just coming from the speaker?

If your processor comes with SpeedStep, setting it to Max Battery would eliminate most problems. My Inspiron 8600c bought 6 months ago also experience the same problem.
Check this thread guys, it might be of some help.

Hope that helps! :)

The problem was fixed for me by going into the BIOS setup and disabling the power saving mode when running on battery.
I wonder how much that will kill my battery life? It's unusable with the power saving on, if anyone is around anyway.
