I7-720QM vs I5-520

I am looking ot get a Dell studio 17 in laptop.  I have two choices  , both are approximately the same price.  One has the I5-520 and the other the I7-720.  My natural inclination is the I7 that also comes with an ATI Radeon graphics card.  However, when I look at tech specs the I5 has a 2.2ghz and the I7 only 1.6ghz.  Any suggestions as to which is better? Thanks.

The i7 processor is the better as it is quad core whilst the i5 is a dual core. in theory the i7 can handle more processes and at faster speeds than the i5.

However i would advise you to read any posts regarding the 17 as there have been a few issues with power and the cpu.

Raz,

i agree with your analysis on this issue.  i've had a Core i7 equipped computer since December, and had to have it replaced because the previous one died on me.  however, with the new computer, i've had nothing but positive experiences (except for the iTunes sync issue, which may be traceable to an Intel issue, and DELL seems to be working on solutions, as most models - not the Studio 1557 - have had the problem resolved).

if the PC is being used solely for home use, and you don't need an ultra powerful computer, you may realize some battery savings by going with the less powerful Core i5.  don't be fooled by the speed of the processor.  all that tells you is that the processor runs at a certain frequency when conducting its business, but can't be compared to other machines.  you wouldn't say that a 3.3Ghz Pentium 4 processor is faster than a 2.67Ghz Core i7!  that's why most of that branding has gone away: they're deceptive, and don't provide much of a help in selecting a processor, unless comparing two different processors of the same class (Core i7 920 - 2.67Ghz - is slower than the 975 - 3.33Ghz)
