Inspiron 1000 Screen Problems

My lcd screen doesn't work but a monitor plugged in the back does. When I did the dell diagnostic test, I got an error saying something about not being able to access the lcd inverter. I tried a new lcd inverter but the same thing happens. When I turn the laptop on, I can toggle between the lcd screen and the ext. monitor or have the both working by pressing F3 but when Windows XP  finishes booting up it switches the lcd screen off. Does this sound like a hardware or software problem?

Hardware; the system board is faulty.

It maybe so, but not that obvious to me. You can check this though very easy by saving a ghost image of your drive first (so you won't loose the data) and re-loading windows from scratch. If your LCD won't work THEN than the problem must be on the motherboard. Makes sense?
Did you try to make LCD work in Windows by changing screen resolution?
