Inspiron 1545. Keyboard Problem. Cant type '5','6','Ctrl' or the button under 'Esc'.
I have had this computer for just over a year.
I was word proccessing yesterday and tried to type in the number 'six'. I soon found that pressing either the 'five','six', 'Delete' 'Home', the button under 'Esc' or the left hand 'Ctrl" button did absolutely nothing.
(for the above title i copied the characters off the net).
As most people would, i use the 'Ctrl' and 'Delete' keys very frequently (not anymore) and not being able to use numbers is also very frustrating.
Since my warranty has expired i have looked at forums and have found similar problems (such as the one concerning the control button and the touchpad) however i can still not find any help for my problem.
I am not expecting any help from Dell as my warranty is expired and they are pretty useless if they aren't getting money from you,
so help for this would be a greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Jeremy.

Try a USB keyboard. If it is good, then your keyboard needs replacing.

Try removing the keyboard from the system and plugging it back in, incase it is some lose connection to the mainboard.
Follow instructions in the service manual <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> for guidance.

Just noticed this thread when browsing for something else.
If it's any consolation, I too had the same prob. Worked with a USB KB, though.
I purchased a replacement keyboard through Amazon (sic) which cost me all of £8.99 (or thereabouts - under £9, anyway) plus postage.
It arrived the next day and replacement took 10 mins.
Look up the WS manual for instructions, but basically, you use a small screwdriver to lever up the panel with the power switch button (open screen lid as wide as you can and be VERY careful - the panel is not the strongest. There is even a screwdriver indent on the RHS.
Remove 2 screws revealed at top and slide the KB forward then up, being careful not to whack the screen with it. Open up the clip (it hinges up) which secures the ribbon cable to the mobo, then reverse to procedure to install the new KB, being careful to get the ribbon cable central in the socket..
Even the most unskilled can do it in 10 mins.
Good luck.

This worked for me. Thank you! Basically once I booted into Safe Mode, my keyboard worked. Then I rebooted into regular mode and the keys still worked.
Tip: If you can't hit F8 to boot into Safe Mode, you can do it through the Windows utility MSCONFIG on the Boot tab.
