Inspiron 600M hard drive replacement
The hard drive on my 600M is going -- we were able to get it running again so I could save information. I need to know if the following is compatible: • Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320 GB SATA/300 2.5-inch Hard Drive • General Features: • 320 GB storage capacity • SATA/300 transfer rate • Serial ATA interface • 5400 RPM spindle speed • 8 MB buffer • 12 ms average read seek time • 5.5 ms average latency • 2.5-inch form factor • 9.5 mm drive height • Power Specifications: • +5V, 0.55A It's similar to what Dell recommends, is larger and cheaper, but I want to make sure it will fit. Dell's is out of stock,anyhow, and I want to get it as soon as possible before it completely crashes. Thanks, Peggy

Peggy, how did you make out on your drive replacement. i have the same issue. i checked with dell they told me that i could put an internal drive of 160 g max. l looked on line and found that the i could do for my insprion e1405/m600 - i found memory giant, they recommeded a 250 g western digitial laptop IDE drive that would be compatible - that was the max drive.
dell and others recommended an external hard drive to store my junk

If you install Windows to a drive over 120G, you must indeed partition it such that Windows does not cross the 120G barrier.

Peggy, I am not sure of the maximum size the 600m can handle (and notebooks do limit sizes of the HDD) but I can tell you the drive you are asking about is not going to work. The 600m uses the old "IDE" (sometimes refered to as "ATA" or more recently "PATA") not the newer tech SATA. I would go with the post from forbesjf and assume that Dell informed forbesjf correctly by saying the maximum drive you can use would be the 160GB IDE/ATA/PATA drive. I have tried before to use larger drives than the makers said was max and was unable to use the drives as one solid drive, though sometimes partitioning a larger drive may work if you make sure not to pass to 160GB max on any partition you make.
