gulgil159,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Users:

  1. Remove the system from the docking station, if applicable.
  2. Determine if there have been any recent hardware or software configuration changes.
  3. Disconnect external peripherals.
  4. Upgrade to or reinstall the latest touchpad drivers.
  5. Flash / Upgrade the BIOS.
  6. Change the sensitivity settings for the pointing device.
  7. Apply pressure to the right of the touchpad.
  8. Disable the touch-pad.
    • Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    • Double-click the Mouse icon.
    • The Mouse Properties window appears.
    • Click the Device Settings tab.
    • Click to highlight Pointing Stick and click Disable.
    • Click OK.

Further troubleshooting ideas can be found in this knowledgebase article.

One more idea, often third-party mouse drivers can cause performance issues with the system's touchpad. If you are using an external mouse and it requires additional drivers, I would suspect that these drivers are likely conflicting with those for the touch-pad. You should remove the drivers for both pointing devices and then reinstall those for the mouse that you wish to use.

Thanks for your reply.

On my Inspiron I installed Microsoft Mouse Software IntelliPoint 4.1 and the mouse is connected to USB port.

If I clic Control Panel>Mouse>Hardware I get only two devices:

Microsoft PS/2 PortMouse (IntelliPoint)

Microsoft USB Wheel Mouse Optical (IntelliPoint)

Nothing for touch-pad. I can't disable the touch-pad.

Bye.

I have a similar problem. A little while ago my pointer started drifting to the top right edge of the screen on my Inspiron 8000. I checked in here and took the advice to disable the touchpad. This worked perfectly, until this week when the pointer started flying up again. Now when I check the control panel - mouse, there's no touchpad for me to disable.

Anyone any ideas?

I have a Inspiron 4100 and also have the same problem. After weeks of experimenting with different connections and driver installation / reinstallation, it appeared to be a hardware problem. Specifically, the stick mouse (the thing that looks like a pencil eraser in the middle of the key board) was somehow 'stuck'.

This is really stupid but it worked for me. Manupulate the stick mouse forcefully in all directions, if u can 'dislodge' the 'stuck' mouse, the cursor should go back to 'normal'.   In a similar token, it should work too if u can disable the stick mouse, since the cursor is no longer driven by the 'stuck' mouse. Good luck.

I have a ispiron 8000 that is out of warentee.  I have been so frustrated over this, first checking for software issues (ie. trojans, viruses, ect.)  Through reading the forum here, and messing witht he mouse stick in the middle of the keyboard, I was finally able to narrow it down to that, as it caused changes in the mouse drift.  I tried to update my mouse driver by pressing the update driver in the mouse driver, but nothing changed.

I finally got the idea to cut the cable.  By removing the screws on the undersided with a K, the keyboard pops out.  there are two ribbon cables that join and plug into the motherboard, the skinner white one went to the stick pointer.  I cut that, reassembled everything, powered up the system, with no effect to the computer or the keyboard.  I am so relieved that I have fixed this problem for good that I had to take the time to share this with others.  I would echo the other user that made the comment that I wouldn't have done this if this computer wasn't near the end of it's life, but it did work, so...

good luck!
