New D620 Launch?

Hey folks,

I just wanted to ask if anyone had any information on the possibility of a update to the current D610 in the near future? The reason is we are looking to replace our current C640 laptops which are coming round to 3 years now with new ones and I wondering if its worth hanging back for a possible D620, or just buy a bunch of 610's? Does anyone have any information on when the D620 will become available, possible spec?

Any info would be of great help, I currently trying to contact our Dell Account Manager, but just thought i'd post here also...

thanks!

Alan

What memory chips the D620 eats? Dell price for 4GB memory is something like 3700€ (just for the memory)( 2*2GB@667MHz), which sounds quite expensive..Compare that to the 170€ extra you need to put in to get 2GB. Makes you think if you really want to go from 2GB -> 4GB right now..

From personal experience when ordering kit, I always spec the lowest memory option and then buy the same memory elsewhere. It always works out cheaper, as an alternative, I question their memory prices directly with our Dell Sales Rep when ordering the kit, and they always fire back a quote with it cheaper.

What about the Graphics card choice on the D620?
Intel GMA 950 or NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M?

If you want Windows Vista to run on it later, it is preferred to have a Graphics card that supports WDDM and DirectX9 right?

Turns out that the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M is not on the list of Vista ready cards, and therefor probably not WDDM compliant although I could not confirm this on the Nvidia site. The GMA 950 however is WDDM compliant, but is no real 3D card.

Am I right in presuming that the GMA 950 is the best choice for Vista, and not the NVS 110M ?

It's too early to tell, Vista is still 6 months away to OEM, I would say it is but if it isn't the only disadvantage would be the glass effect in the OS. No big deal as I turn this feature off and the system runs much quicker

Nvidia or Intel UMA, this is a really good question that I have been trying to get an answer for.

My initial thought was that of course the Nvidia card will support Vista WDDM and I ordered a laptop with the "Nvidia discrete card" without even blinking. Yesterday I got a swan in my throat since i realized the Nvidia card is not on the Vista-compatible-list. I have been trying to get any information if the 100M card will be supported or not. My guess (or should I asy hope) is that the Nvidia list is just outdated as this is a new card..

There seems to be no way to contact Nvidia to get information about this.

It's not too early. If you look at Microsofts specs for using Aero Glass (Windows Aero) it should work!

The demands for being Vista-Aero-Glass-compatible is quote:

To enable Windows Aero, PC systems must meet the following criteria for graphics hardware, with either discrete or UMA solutions:

1.

DirectX 9 class graphics hardware that supports WDDM and Pixel Shader 2.0

2.

A minimum of 32 bits per pixel

3.

Appropriate graphics memory for specified monitor resolutions expressed as total pixels (X dimension multiplied by Y dimension):

1.

64MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolution of 1,310,720 pixels (equivalent to 1280 x 1024) or less

2.

128MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions higher than 1,310,720 pixels and less than or equal to 2,304,000 pixels (equivalent to 1920 x 1200)

3.

256MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor at resolutions higher than 2,304,000 pixels

4.

Graphics memory bandwidth, as assessed by Windows Vista’s built in system assessment tool WinSAT.EXE, of at least 1,800MB/s at following resolution:

1.

Desktop PC: at a monitor resolution of 1,310,720 pixels (equivalent to 1280 x 1024)

2.

Mobile PC: at the native resolution of built-in display

US Website states:
256MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 110M TurboCache™
May delay your Latitude D820 ship date

Latest NVidia drivers for Vista I can find are dated February 24.  Sounds kinda old for the 110M.

Nvidia Compatibility list.

Laptop Magazine currently has a review of the D620 with the integrated graphics and WSXGA resolution (1280 X 768).

Funny, if you go to the D620 configuration screen, it doesn't indicate any delay for the that Nvidia card.  Maybe they are allocated for the D620 and if you order a D820, they are waiting for their shipment to come in.?

There is some information available regarding the 110M on this forum:

PCMag has 3dMark05 performance figures for D820 and 120M:

hmm, maybe this is why i've been quoted the 1st May as a Delivery date for my D620... I spec'd it with the nVidia card.
