Possible Solution to USB problem: Targus USB Mini Optical Mouse

I just got my new Dell Latitude D600, rebuilt it with Win 2000 (came with XP home, yuck...), installed all drivers and tested it. Everything seemed to be fine, until I plugged in my mini USB optical mouse (PAUM01). The thing would work fine, but then failed everytime I restarted the laptop, getting the yellow ! icon in Device Manager. After, tweaking around I think I found the solution:

- go to BIOS setup screen (press F2 while booting)

- move to Page 4 on the BIOS screen

- Set "USB Emulation" setting to: disable (don't know why this needs to be on? who's using OS without USB support anyway?)

It seems to work fine so far....

You asked about why this option is enabled; I have read that it is for DOS.
