Strange Clicking Sound

My Dell Inspiron 1750 has started making intermittent clicking noises.  I know if I took it to a repair shop, it wouldn't make any noise.  I was wondering if anyone knows if this could be my hard drive going out?

Thanks,

Leslie

Hi leslielynn,

There are 3 components on the system that can make clicking noise; hard drive, optical drive and the system fan. Please try to determine from which side of the system you are hear the clicking noise.

I would suggest you to check for the hardware functionality by running hardware diagnostics on the system:

  • Power on and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu
  • When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
  • The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
  • In case any hardware component is bad, you will get a corresponding error.

You may update the system BIOS from the link: http://dell.to/1g1lmHN.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reply for any further assistance.

Hi Amogh.  Thanks for getting back to me.  I did the diagnostic test, and everything seems to be okay.  The clicking is coming from the left side, toward the back.  It is so intermittent.  It hasn't made the sound today at all.

Hi Leslie,

Please let me know if you have updated the BIOS. If the clicking noise is not coming after the BIOS update then it seems that the noise was coming from the system fan.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist further.
