WinDVD "create overlay failed" - I've tried everything!!!! Help!
I've done everything, and I still can't play DVDs with WinDVD4,Version: 4.0 DXVA B11.030
- already tried everything from Dell KB article, Why do I receive the error "Create Overlay Failed" when starting WinDVD?

- installed RS2171.exe - for InterVideo WinDVD update
- installed RS65078.exe - for intel graphics driver update
- unistalled WinDVD, and re-installed, the re-installed above patch
- toggled the video setting of NetMeeting, also verified it's not running
- hardware acceleratin is enabled (all the way to the right)
- DirectX is running and dxdiag.exe tool says all is well: Direct3D acceleration is enabled, DirectDraw is not available, nor is AGP texture acceleration
- set display to high color (16 bit) and resolution to 800x600
- fully patched XP Pro
Anything else? Intergraphics has a piece of sh## web site, with very few suggestions on how to fix this problem.

Ok people!
I am a big help here for you I will also upload some screen shots to help you! I did this on 4 computers and it worked! If you get the message Create Overlay Failed! Follow theese instructions! (100% they will help)
1.Open WinDVD4
2.Click where the green arrow is pointing on picture!
3.Click on Display as shown in picture.
4.Click on the tool where the green arrow is pointing.
5.Make sure the two boxes are checked! Make sure its exactly like in picture.

I had the same problem. Tried everything. Found out my APG Texture Acceleration was turned off in my directx. Make sure direct3d is turned on also.

After months of trying every possible suggestion on this board, from my IT group, or from colleagues, I finally found a solution to this problem on my Latitude C640.
Just to summarize my specific problem...when trying to view any DVD movie using WinDVD via the laptop screen, I would get the "Create Overlay Failed" error that everyone here seems to get. However, if I dock my laptop and view via an external monitor, it works fine. I have downloaded just about every known driver, changed just about every setting but could still not get this to work w/o the docking port and monitor.
The solution given to me by a Dell Support person from far away Panama was to:
1) Dock laptop.
2) Delete the 'Un-docked' profile in the Control Panel - System - Hardware - Hardware Profiles.
3) Once deleted, power down laptop.
4) Undock laptop.
5) Power back up while undocked.
6) Miraculously, WinDVD worked w/o any issues!
I was kinda shocked that this was the only thing that was causing this error. I have no idea how that profile got corrupt. Regardless it works great now no matter what resolution I use. Apparently you can crank up to max resolution and still works.
I hope this helps some of you! (sure beats bringing a docking port and monitor on a plane!)
