Black screen and keyboard lights up after sleep

I have several Dells, latitude's, vostro's and inspiron's, and there seems to be a common problem with all of them.

That is that from time to time after they go into sleep mode (from closing the lid down), when opening them back up the keyboard lights up but the screen does not come on.

The only way to get past this is to hold down the power button for around 5-10 seconds until the lights go off (not just press it the once quickly), and then press the power button again once the lights are off and then it boots up from fresh.

I have hp's and lenovo laptops also, and non of them have this issue. Is this a dell problem with sleep mode? It's not a constant thing. I would say maybe 1 in every 10 sleeps it does this.

I've seen forums with others having this issue and i wondered if anyone has actually solved the problem and stopped this?

Here are some steps you can try to make sure your laptop wakes up properly after Sleep mode:

  1. Update Drivers and BIOS: Outdated drivers or BIOS firmware can sometimes cause sleep mode issues. Ensure that you have the latest drivers and BIOS updates installed for your Dell laptops. You can usually find these updates on Dell's support website.

  2. Adjust Power Settings: Sometimes, power settings can cause problems with sleep mode. Try adjusting the power settings in the Control Panel to see if it makes a difference as per the video below:

  1. Disable Fast Startup: Fast Startup is a feature in Windows that can cause issues with sleep mode on some systems. Try disabling Fast Startup to see if it resolves the problem. You can do this by going to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do, then uncheck the box next to "Turn on fast startup (recommended)".

  2. Check for Background Processes: Sometimes, background processes or applications can interfere with sleep mode. Make sure that no unnecessary programs are running in the background before putting the laptop to sleep.

  3. Reset Power Management Settings: You can try resetting the power management settings to their default values to see if that helps. You can do this by opening an elevated Command Prompt and running the following commands: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

  4. Contact Dell Support: If you still need assistance, please contact support by clicking the ‘Get Help Now’ button located at the bottom right corner of the page. The button is marked with a help icon for easy recognition as per the picture below:

This issue with Dell laptops not waking up from sleep mode is a known problem and can have several potential causes such as outdated drivers, power settings, or hardware issues. To resolve the issue, you can try updating your drivers, adjusting the power settings, or performing a diagnostic test on your laptop. If the issue persists, it is recommended to contact Dell support for further assistance.

Well you can try the following

  1. Turn off Hibernation.
  2. Try a dedicated troubleshooter.
  3. Disable fast startup.
  4. Update the graphics card driver.
  5. Uninstall problematic apps.
  6. Disable onboard graphics.
  7. Disable Sleep mode

I have the same issue with my Latitude E6440. I gave up yesterday rebooting it so i just closed it and slept. went to school today and only opened my Dell Latitude 4pm and fortunately, it is back to its normal screen. Guess it just needed to rest for a long period lol
