Those connectors can be difficult to disconnect and reconnect. Part of the problem is that they are tiny, so it's difficult to get a decent grip on the plug with your fingers. The plug slides into a plastic jack, and when you try to squeeze the plug you often are actually squeezing the sides of the jack instead.

You may need to use tweezers or very fine pliers to get under the lip of the plug to free it a bit. You need to ensure that you're pulling on the plug and not on the fixed jack or on the wires. Reading glasses or magnifying glasses can help you to get a clearer view of what you're doing. Pull straight out from the jack/socket.

Edit: I just looked in the Latitude 5590 Owners Manual. It's hard to tell, but it appears that the plug might pull horizontally out from the jack/socket. I can't be certain, but the diagram kind of suggests that. I've never seen one that detaches/inserts horizontally, but perhaps it does. Use reading glasses or a magnifying glass to get a good look, to ensure that you're pulling in the right direction, either horizontally (maybe this one) or vertically (all the ones that I've worked on).

Whenever touching components or working inside a computer, wear a grounded wrist strap, also called anti-static wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet. It's a cheap and sensible precaution. Rest the laptop on an anti-static mat or at least a reasonable alternative such as corrugated cardboard. (Repeatedly touching a metal case part is not sufficient mitigation with modern components.)

If you remain unable to disconnect it, I can suggest an alternative way to deal with it.

If nothing is broken on the motherboard, if only something on the old cable or its plug is broken, then that's okay. The new CMOS battery has its own cable and plug, so it doesn't matter if you broke the old one.

A new CMOS battery should give you several years of life. That one already has four years of age on it. Batteries deteriorate even if they're not in use. I would want a fresher CMOS battery, not one that's four years old.

Good morning. I couldn't reply before now, because it was night here and I was asleep. Now I came to give you details of an alternative way to install new battery without disconnecting the old connector.

However, two points:

  • If the second photo is what you bought, that battery is already four years old. You should ask the seller for a newer battery.
  • In your first photo, it looks as though you may have broken the jack or socket on the motherboard. Is that correct? If you broke that, then you won't be able to connect a new battery.

If the jack or socket on the motherboard is indeed broken, you would have to replace the motherboard. You would have to decide if it's worth the expense to repair a five-year-old laptop, or if you'd rather put that money towards a new laptop or perhaps a used laptop of a later model.

Alternatively, you might be able to use the laptop without a CMOS battery, but it would not be able to save any changes to settings in BIOS/Setup. Depending upon default configuration, you might have to enter BIOS/Setup each time you boot, in order to choose the boot device. You could try it to see. If it boots from your drive without issue, and if you don't need to save any changes to BIOS, then you might be okay without a CMOS battery.
