DCU version 4.1.0 unable to retrieve system inventory information on Latitude E6230

I'm running Win 10 Pro, 64-bit OS on my Latitude E6230 and lately the Dell Command Update will not complete and displays: "unable to retrieve system inventory information." I've uninstalled & re-installed both Dell-Command-Update-Application-for-Windows-10_DF2DT_WIN_4.1.0_A00 and Dell-Command-Update-Application_P5R35_WIN_4.1.0_A00 execution files with no luck. Any suggestions please?

@00042 I apologise, because I didn't word my question very well. I meant to ask if the date of the file has changed from January 22 to something else now, because if it is still January 22 my theory doesn't make sense!

Antient: Thanks for your prompt reply.  After finding the same error with my March 01, 2021 image, I restored a current image which contained the April 06, 2021 file.

Has there been a solution to this problem?  We have been unable to check for updates in more than a week.  Until last week, it was not a problem.

Please add me to the list of users who are unable to update via DCU 4.0.0 and 4.1.0.  Additionally, SupportAssist 3.8.1.23 also does not recognize the System Inventory and can not provide any updates via the "Get Drivers & Downloads" section.

This is strange.  I uninstalled the latest Dell Update.  I then installed Dell Update v.3.0.0 and was able to run it without the error.  However, the invColPC.exe file is the new one dated April 05, 2021.  Perhaps this file is not the culprit?

Same issue on a Vostro 5370. However, when I checked my wife's Vostro 5471 this morning (14/04/21), with same version 4.1.15.0 of Dell Update, it ran correctly. As the 5471 is little-used and had not been run or updated since 29/03/2021, I thought I would run all Windows and Store updates and that would surely cause Dell Update to fail. It didn't - so now two fully updated and very similar systems, one has Dell Update working, one "unable to retrieve system inventory information". On the failing system, Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer show invcol.exe crashing, faulting module icsvc.dll.

I have exactly the same problem with various models: 5510, 5520, 5590 here in Australia.

Most of these were working fine just prior to Easter but now all are failing.

The problem appears to be a Dell service that DCU connects to.

Hopefully Dell will get this sorted out in fairly short order as we have dozens of machines that we are rolling out to staff and need them to have the latest updates, including the BIOS.

Same here, on a Latitude 5580, 64 bit Win 10 recently upgraded from 1909 to 20H2. A/V is Bitdefender GravityZone.

Originally had DCU 2.4.0. I usually upgrade DCU first, by itself, before upgrading anything else.

Went to 4.1. Silly me. "Unable to retrieve system inventory information". Googled it. I'm here, ain't I?

Uninstalled, rebooted, went back to 2.4. Now it goes through the motion of downloading updates (1 of 5, 2 of 5, etc), but the download byte count remains at 0, and when it's "done" doing nothing, it says "Warning: no updates downloaded successfully"

Oh gee.

Same issue on Inspiron 5570.

I dug up a 7490 with 1809 on it - hadn't been online since November 2019.  Installed 4.1 and it worked as advertised.

Same here on an XPS 15 9570.

Put the corporate image (20H2) on the same 7490 system and big fail - prior to policy updates or even truly joining the domain.  Whatever component of Dell's Command Update is ticking off some security layer, we're not changing a thing to make it work.  A straight up Dell image works fine - but the real world doesn't run on home PCs.

Hello,

I have the same problem "Dell Command Update not working at all since approx 4 April 2021".

I will try to describe all the tests I have done to try to solve the problem. Although it is a long message I think it may help to solve the problem that a large number of users already have.

However, moving forward to the possible solution, I would like to be able to reinstall Dell Inventory Collector (9.5.1) - InvColPC.exe in (C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\UpdateService\Service\InvColPC.exe), so I would appreciate if someone could provide me with the download link and installation instructions to replace the current installation which I think is buggy. I think maybe it could solve the problem.

Or if someone have found a different solution, I would be grateful if you could let me know so that I can correct the problem as soon as possible.

------------------------------------

In my case I have a DELL XPS 15 9570 with Windows 10 20H2 (19042.928).

So far Dell Update (v 4.1.0) and Support Assist (3.8.1) have worked perfectly. In fact, I regularly update the system manually every week. However, a couple of weeks ago both stopped working.

As described by other users, in Dell Update (v 4.1.0) the message "Could not retrieve system inventory information" and in Support Assist (3.8.1) "unexpected error".

In case it helps, I have made the following tests or findings:

  • I have uninstalled and reinstalled Dell Update (v 4.1.0) (Dell-Update-Alienware-Update-Application_92HRG_WIN_4.1.0_A00 (2)) and Support Assist (3.8.1).
  • Following some comments from some forums, I have tried to install:
    • Dell Update (v 4.1.0) (Dell-Update-Alienware-Update-Application-for-Windows_292RG_WIN_4.1.0_A00).
    • Dell Update (v 3.0.0) (Dell-Update-Application_JD7FD_WIN_3.0.0_A00).
    • Dell Command Update (Dell-Command-Configure_N9DPF_WIN_4.4.0.86_A00).

I have identified that there is a conflict with Dell Inventory Collector - InvColPC.exe (C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\UpdateService\InvColPC.exe). In my case I have installed version 9.5.1 dated 6 April 2021.

As I have not found the installer for InvColPC.exe version 9.5.1, I have tried to install an older version (invcolpc_8.2.4.1), but it does not change the version I have installed on the system, nor have I found a tidy way to uninstall it. (http://downloads.dell.com/folder06229118m/1/invcolpc_8.2.4.1.exe)

Based on testing, running either version of Dell Update creates a new directory in C:/Windows/temp called "invXXXX_tmp" which contains the following files:

  • dsupt32.dll
  • icvc32.dll
  • Invcol.exe
  • Msvcp140.dll
  • Vcruntime140.dll

This directory is deleted a few seconds after running Dell Update.

On the other hand, as indicated in C:\ProgramDataDell\UpdateService\Log\Service.log, the command "C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\UpdateService\InvColPC. exe -outc=C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdateService\Temp\Inventory.tmp" which tries to generate an XML file called Inventory.tmp, as shown in the attached code below.

In my case, inside "C:\ProgramDataDell\UpdateService\Temp\" there is no "Inventory.tmp" file, but there was a file called "Inventory.old". As the Temp folder is protected and would not let me modify anything, I changed the permissions and the owner to put my admin user. At this point I tried several things to restore the file "Inventory.tmp".

  • I have launched manually from CMD (with administrator permissions) the command "C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\UpdateService\InvColPC.exe -outc=C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdateService\Temp\Inventory.tmp". The result is that no file has been generated. I tried directing the command to an unprotected folder, but it didn't generate any file either.
  • I modified the extension from "Inventory.old" (I understand it is an old version of the inventory) to "Inventory.tmp" and then tried launching Dell Update (4.1.0), but it still gave the same error.

Seeing that the problem may be derived from the fact that InvColPC.exe (9.5.1) does not generate the "Inventory.tmp" file, I tried to generate it with an older version.

  • I downloaded InvColPC.exe (8.2.4.1), unzipped the files with 7zip and ran from CMD (with administrator permissions) the command "C:\Program Files (x86)\InvColPC.exe -outc=C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdateService\Temp\Inventory.tmp", so it did generate the "Inventory.tmp" file. I then ran Dell Update (4.1.0) which re-executed the command "C:\Program Files (x86)\Dellell\UpdateService\Service\InvColPC.exe -outc=C:\ProgramDataDell\UpdateService\Temp\Inventory. tmp" with the installed version of InvColPC.exe (9.5.1), so the generated "Inventory.tmp" file has been deleted and has returned the same initial error "Could not retrieve system inventory information".

Based on testing, I understand that the problem is that Dell Inventory Collector - InvColPC.exe (9.5.1) installed on 6 April 2021, without my knowledge, fails to generate the file "C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdateService\Temp\Inventory.tmp" and therefore Dell Update (all versions) is unable to find the system inventory to see which updates are relevant.

I have also checked the Windows Event Viewer under Windows Application Log. I detected the following:

  • 01/04/2021 16:57:32 Recurring error appears with 7 events (see error 1 below) DELL Support Assist Agent.
  • 07/04/2021 11:52:53 From here, a recurring error (error 2) appears in invcol.exe and icsvc32.dll that generates an event every time I run Dell Update (v 4.1.0) or Support Assist (3.8.1).
  • 15/04/2021 11:52:53 From here, recurring errors (error 3) appear in invcol.exe and icsvc32.dll, in other locations, derived from testing to fix the problem. C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\UpdateService\Service\InvColPC\invcol.exe or in C:\Userspronceda\AppData\Local\Temp\inv3AAA_tmp\invcol.exe

I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks.
