Dell latitude 5490 touchpad button not working
Hi,
I bought a latitude 5490 i5 8th gen laptop and encountered a problem with the touchpad buttons. The bottom touchpad(both left and right click) do not work but the ones above (connected to the keyboard) do work. Is it possible to connect up a touchpad from a different laptop to see if it is the motherboard or just a touchpad button fault. I do not own another 5490 to check but I have a 7290, a 7490, a 3300 and a 3400 laptop (all made in the same generation- 8th gen). I am hoping I can just connect the touchpad buttons from one of these laptops into the 5490 to diagnose the problem.
I don't really want to take apart the 7290 and 7490 as they are in constant use but the other 2 are fine to be dismantled for this test. I am asking if this is possible

I ended up buying a 5490 touchpad button set for 4 pounds off eBay. It was the only one available. I opened up the laptop and put the new one in. It felt a bit different to the old on - I think it was a different brand as the ribbon cable looked different. Everything worked fine though afterwards.

First thing to check is the condition of the battery -- which will mean removing the base cover. One of the first signs of battery swelling is very often an issue with the touchpad or touchpad buttons.
If the battery is swelling, remove it immediately and replace it once you can order a new one.

Hi,
The battery looks fine and in bios it is at 99% health so how should I proceed?

Hi, did you ever find a fix for your issue? I am having the exact same problem with the same model Dell. The top mouse buttons work, the bottom ones do not. Also, double tapping the touchpad to act as the left mouse button does not work either.

i found out my pc sometimes like ghsot touching. same model 5490 i5 8th gen, seems like right click button accidently work by itself after restarting OS... every time. help me
