Dell latitude 5580 lagging issue?
Now I'm aware this laptop isn't good for gaming, but since I mostly play valorant, roblox and minecraft it should be able to handle it since valorant is a medium-lightweight game (not in storage terms), but I seem to always run into an issue, after a bit of playing any game that uses both D-GPU and i-GPU, I'd say 10-15 minutes, it will suddenly lag spike? the FPS drops to around 10-2 FPS and it's really annoying, my temps are fine so I'm not sure if its a GPU issue or heating issue, any help?
note: this laptop has been used before at a university for 3 years, so I'm aware it isn't as new as it would be.

(SPOILER; It was a CPU power throttle issue folks.)
UPDATE: It's currently December 18, 2025 and I haven't updated this in a while so here we go. I was able to fix this issue by increasing the CPU Lowest Throttle Value or the CPU Energy Throttle from 5% to 10%.
5%= 0.90 Ghz. And below, CPU Power throttles and causes a lag issue with the GPU's, CPU Freaks out
6-20%= 1.00 Ghz. And above, CPU Power throttles but maintains performance, CPU Relatively cool and calm.
You can find this in the Advanced Power Plan Options in the Power Plan settings. It's a relatively easy fix, but an effective one.

It's probably throttling. Has the system ever had a thorough internal cleaning and replacement of the heatsink pads? If not, start there.

It also may have some startup programs running in the background, so you may want to check that. How much memory do you have?

@ECharles My internal memory is 16GB. most of my startup programs are lightweight/dont affect me, this happened too when i had freshly installed windows when i first got the used laptop

@HedgeFundManager Still at issue, im considering checking the battery for any damage and cleaning the fans again but other than that, not much has changed.

Replacement batteries are not all that expensive.

Skylake/Kaby Lake uses DDR4 so its possible to install 32GB which would run Windows 11 great.
Installing a SSD will definitely perk up performance. Your machine should have a M.2 slot for a NVMe SSD which can definitely perk up performance.

@HedgeFundManager Heya! When I got the machine it already had an M.2 NVME drive installed, and I upgraded its ram to 32 Gigs last december. I already solved this issue by increasing the lowest amount that the CPU can throttle to.

CPU throttling can be due to aged thermal material. I use Arctic MX-6 which in thin amounts works great.
