Dell Latitude 7480 Laptop that freezes up

We have a Dell Latitude 7480 Laptop that freezes up.  The computer can just be running but sitting unused or in the midst of heavy processing.  The screen is locked up to the last image, but the keyboard, mouse-pad, and external mouse (if being used) have no impact on the Laptop.     Letting it sit while locked up has no impact on it.  We can power it down with the power button and that unlocks it for a while.  Dell onsite support could not fix it, and two returns to the Dell repair center did not help despite replacing drives and new OS (Windows 10).  We just had Dell send out a tech who replaced the motherboard, memory, and Drive.  It froze up on us twice within hours.  We and Dell seem to be stumped.

We just performed the full ePSA test several times with no findings.           BIOS = 1.9.3          EPSA: Build 4304.17    UEFI ROM.  Has anyone had any similar issues.

Same with me. Leave the room (say for lunch) and come back. Frozen. CTRL ALT DEL doesn't work. Only holding power button until shutoff.  I don't know how to reseat the SSD

@ScrubbaDub that's strange if the system is freezing without movement or being picked up.

The issue that is being discussed in the thread suggests that fault is related to the SSD and when the system is picked up on the left hand side, the pressure on the components results in the system freezing.

Before we get into reseating the drive,I would like to carry out some basic troubleshooting first.

a) Does the system freeze regardless of whether its running on ac power or battery?

b) Do you get any error messages when you get the system restarted?

c) Do you get any error messages or thermal warnings before the system fails?

d) Have you run the ePSA diagnostics on the system to check for any hardware issues? (To run the ePSA, hold down the Fn key and power on the system. If the system detects a fault it will return an error code. Please note this down)

e) If the system is freezing without being moved, that could be connected to the OS. Have you tried any OS / Windows troubleshooting i.e system reset, ensuring all drivers and BIOS are up to date?

I'll drop you a private message to get your service tag details.

Alan

Hi,
I have the same problem. Laptop just freezes when all utilities are unplugged, mouse, charger etc. I tried reinstall intel graphics but it didn't help. The laptop is Dell 7480 with i7 - 7600u. I don't know what to do. It is just annoying that I can not work with no external devices connected because the blue screen appear with code "WHEA" or the screen just freeze and laptop become unresponsive.

Hi,

I was facing the same problem on my Latitude 7380. The problem was solved by installing a specific video adapter driver (available on dell support page).

Here what i did:

1. Download the video adapter driver version 24.20.100.6223 A07 (link: https://www.dell.com/support/home/pt-br/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=thgpg&oscode=wt64a&productco...)

2. Reboot on safe mode

3. Open de the device manager (devmgmt.msc)

4. Disable the video adapter driver

5. Remove the video adapter driver (mark the checkbox to completely remove the driver)

6. Reboot

7. After system start up, quickly turn off your internet connection otherwise the Windows will update and install the lastest video adapter driver.

8. Install the driver from the step '1'

9. Reboot

10. Check on devmgmt.msc if the driver version is 24.20.100.6223.

After i did this, no more freezes or bluescreens (WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR).

This solution works like a charm - I had the same problem with notebook freezing in random moment, uninstalling the newest driver and installing the 24.xxx.xxx one fixed the problem. Many thanks for help.

Hi,

I got the same issue with freezing OS without any errors, only power off helps. Checking your solution, regarding to drivers now.

After 3 days of using laptop, like ~10 hours in total I didn't notice any issues regarding to freezing PC. Thank you for sharing the solution.

OS has automatically upgraded intel drivers to v 27.20.100.9171. I'll check if there are any issues on that version.

So far, so good. For 2 days no freezes etc. I'm not sure how, but it helped.

Drivers were installed manually with version 24.x.x.x., then OS updated it to 27.x.x.x. But not I didn't seen any freezes for like ~8 hours.

I found this thread as I own a Dell 7480 and it has the same issue, except with me I see this when I'm running it under Linux (Mint xfce vers. 20.3). I don't think it has ever done this under Win 10, nor under Linux when connected to the Thunderbolt dock TB16.

I'll keep searching for a solution but would appreciate knowing if anyone has come up with a fix.

You have to move the memory-module from right slot to left slot. The Latitude 7480 has a huge design flaw which result in crash of device when moving it. Because you will probably press the memory out of the slot. The left slot is not that sensitive. So it works. When you use 2 modules, remove 1.
