Dell Latitude E6410 - start up issues

My Dell Latitude E6410 (BIOS Revision A07) turns on to the Dell start up screen, then shows a black illuminated screen with a white _ flashing in the top left hand corner, then it swaps to a longer white _ underneath and slightly further to the right. After that, it goes to a black illuminated screen and nothing happens.

Please help. I've tried so many things.

It sounds like your Hard Drive may have failed or Windows has become corrupted.

Try running the on-board diagnostics (hold down the Fn key whilst you power the system on) and let us know the results.

What version of Windows is installed?

Thanks.

Windows 7 is running. I have a Dell PC which runs on the same program and was fine, until it started having problems. Would the Windows 7 be the problem?

I have tried this prior to posting. When I attempt this, the computer screen freezes, at the Dell logo (at just under half way loaded). Even if I release the button and try F12 (To run the start up menu) nothing happens.

What happens if you keep tapping the F2 key at startup to enter the BIOS/setup? If you are able to access the BIOS, is the Hard Drive detected?

Are you able to remove the Hard Drive from the system and try to run the diagnostics again?

(removal instructions here: http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_latitude_laptop/latitude-e6410_service%20manual_en-us.pdf )

Nothing happens when I tap, hold down, or press the Fn key. However, I can adjust the screen brightness until the computer decides to stop working. After that, it's as if it's frozen.

Hi manfairbro,

In order to trigger the diagnostics the fn key must be held down while the system is off then press the power button and this should automatically take you into the diagnostics, if this does not work please try the method below:

Running Dell Pre-boot System Assessment or enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment (Dell PSA or ePSA)

Dell ePSA or PSA diagnostics are available on Dell laptops, desktops, servers and Windows-based tablets.

  1. Restart your Dell PC.
  2. When the Dell logo appears, tap the F12 key to enter One-time Boot Menu.
  3. Use the arrow keys to select Diagnostics and press Enter key on the keyboard.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts and respond appropriately to complete the diagnostics.
If the test fails, write down the error code and validation code.

Thanks,

Mick.

I'm experiencing the same problem with mine. I'm running Windows 10. Any idea how I can fix this?

E6410 is an old laptop.

Is there any sign of life when you press the Power button? If not it is time to retire the laptop and buy a new one.
