Dell Latitude E6430 fan malfunction
Got this laptop that says Fan malfunction upon boot; it also has a dead battery (I assume this might be part of the issue). The fan:
- does not spin at all
- does not show up in SpeedFan
- appears as 0RPM using Linux's sensors utility
What I've tried:
- loaded default BIOS settings
- upgraded the BIOS from A21 to A24 and viceversa (downgrade to A20 failed twice)
- removed BIOS battery, held down the power button for 15 seconds
- switched it out for a known working fan, the working fan does not spin either
- ran the fan connected to 5V outside the laptop, worked just fine
- cut the 5V wire, soldered it to a longer wire and to a USB port 5V rail, the fan spun at max speed without issue though still reporting a fan malfunction (not really a clean solution, but it works)
That said, is there anything else I can try before I just connect the 5V wire to any 5V rail and call it a day?

The only other option would be to replace the system board, particularly if you don't want to listen to a fan running at full speed all the time.
Before pursuing that option, consider that the value of the system complete and working is well under $100 -- you may be better off simply replacing it with a used system that otherwise functions, and you'll then have a set of spare parts (to keep as backups or sell, perhaps recouping some or all of the cost).
