Dell Latitude E7440 battery crack problem

Question

Hello there.

Recently my laptop's battery suddenly completely degraded and lost its capacity - within days, and, overnight, while charging, the battery case got unusually bigger and cracked. As you can see, it is unusable. As if the battery cells tore it apart.

I do not consider it is safe to use it again with a probably damaged battery cells inside. To me it is not normal to spot something like this happening. I have owned many dells in the past, xps 1530, several e6530s & e6520s, 620, ... but I have never experienced something like this.

I would like to hear from you regarding this matter.

You need to dispose of the battery and purchase a new one.

Has anyone knows what is the reason that the battery get damage? I am facing the same issue? If we buy a new battery will it remain safe from getting cracked again?

The electrolyte breaks down, releasing hydrogen gas that has nowhere to escape -- it can happen to any lithium battery that's at or near end of life.

Just probing to see if anyone else has this happen we've gone through about 30 batteries at our organization recently.. Using the supplied 80 watt adapters when traveling or at home and we use a 130 Watt when to the dock. Seems odd we are popping batteries like crazy.

That would put the batteries at upward of ten years old, if they're original to the system -- which means they've exceeded their design life by a factor of three if not more. They're by far overdue for replacement.
