Dell Precision 3510 randomly turns off when on battery

I have a dell precision 3510, Core i7-6820HQ, M.2 SSD, 16GB Ram.

The laptop works perfect while connected to the charger. but when unplugged it randomly shuts off without warning. all unsaved data is lost.  I did some tests and realised when there is no load it can work well on battery even for more than 2 hours, but the moment you start ramping up CPU/RAM/Disk usage while on battery, the computer shuts off. Even booting the computer while on battery is almost impossible.

Another thing to note is that when this happens, you cannot turn the computer back on unless the charger is plugged in.

My battery health is excellent and i'm on the latest BIOS and drivers.

I have attached videos demonstrating the problem

I have responded but the a reply just told me am out of warranty, and someone will reach out. didn't really try to sort out my issue. interestingly i have come across this 4 year old reddit post. [see screenshot below] he has the exact model of laptop dell precision 3510 and has the exact issue am facing. might really be a battery firmware, since when plugged in the computer works flawlessly. when on battery its almost unusable.

If it was indeed a battery firmware problem four years or so ago when the battery was new, that's one thing - Dell will replace a battery that proves faulty within the first 12 months of a system's life.

They won't replace a 4-year old battery at this point - if it's worked before just fine, what you're seeing is normal deterioration of the battery as it ages from time and from use.   You'll need to replace the battery.

#1. Battery health is excellent, #2. Battery actually holds a charge, reason is from my tests if i dont push the laptop hard, and run light- maybe open one or 2 tabs in chrome, wifi on and maybe a word document, the laptop runs even upto 4-5hrs. That is clearly not a degraded battery. As a side note, all the laptops i have ever owned & used, Dell included, battery capacity goes down gradually with age, till one day it cant hold a charge. It just doesnt shut off the computer when pushed then on the other hand last 5 hours under light load.

Did you ever found a solution?

i have the exact same problem with a dell precision, i've bought 2 brand new batteries and they do the same, so there is not a chance that this is caused by a bad battery.

it might be a problem with the laptop itself.

sorry I never found a solution, i try to keep it plugged in 90% of the time, i thought from day 1 this is either firmware related or a bad circuit board, i dont think its not the battery itself, and your experience almost proves it my hunch.

Has anyone tried a 180w ac adapter instead of the 130w provided?

I have the same laptop you have

and I have 2 problem with this dell precision 3510

1-laptop always overheats then shutdown when playing any game on the graphics card in a few minutes

I brought it to maintenance store they tried to clean and fix everything

2- when i put my ears on the keyboard i hear a strange noise which seems like electric curent or something like that, i dont think this is normal and i dont know what to do

@egoprecision3510

I have exact same problem as U.

Did u found the solution?

I tried a lot of things like cleaning heatsink, checking the fans, changing pasta and much more.

Still stuck in same problem

Randomly shutting when i go hard on laptop and Bios events shows ( critical temperature shutdown) ( power manger shutdown)

I know this is a old post but I solved this issue on my sons laptop.

Installed AMD catalyst software and the laptop works perfect now.

I hope this helps.

@iroc_d after just downloading a software the problem is solved! Kind of unbelievable but anyway do you have the same problem as egoprecision3510? And for me sometimes on 100% charge it doesn't even turn on by pressing power button or even by plugging in the charger, after removing the battery and turning it on with direct power supply it works and it is a stupid thing but I did is connect the battery while its working and again when it's heating up it's shutting down.

@user_563fc5 well it doesn’t solve any problem I was just trying to explain when my laptop shutdown it doesn’t turn back on even by pressing the power button even though the battery is 100% anyway my laptop is working perfectly fine now what I did is removed CMOS then used it for sometime on direct power supply without battery and then installed new CMOS since then it never turns off even while I was playing Gta 5 on it.
