Dell XFR E6420 Fan
I have an XFR and just got a new fan for it. I ran the diagnosis and it says no problems at all with the fan. It even runs just fine during the tests and turns on. Does anyone know if the fan just runs when the computer gets hot or does it run often? I'm trying to find any information regarding this and I can't find anything at all.

I have never checked what the temperature was when the fan kicked in???
While running under normal conditions the fan does turn on periodically.
While doing Windows updates the fan does turn on more frequently.
When I upgrade them to a Quad Core CPU the fans turn on much more often.
The standard CPU for the E6420XFR is 35W and the QC is 45W. "Runs a little hotter"

After doing a BiOS reset I was able to get the fan working. I got the laptop off of an Ebay listing, the seller wasn't specific in what was wrong with it because he had multiple of the XFR E6420. I rebuild laptops for a hobby and this is my first XFR but not my first E6420. I figure, I got off lucky on this one.
I monitored the temp of the CPU when the fan kicks in, it's around 50-60C or 122F-140F. Then the fan runs in short bursts to keep the CPU cool. Some other E (for example the E6440) models keep the fan running at a lower RPM to maintain a core temp but I found this not to be the case with the XFR interestingly enough.
I will eventually look into upgrading to a QC 45W but not any time soon, it's good to know that runs a bit hotter as expected though.
