E5540 battery not charging when computer is off

Question

Battery is in good health and support assist run regularly with not problems. However when the computer is off and plugged in the battery does not charge. When turned on then the charging starts. I have one battery. I checked in device managers and saw 2 items listed Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery. They both seem to have the same specs except that under properties events one has a 2 attached to it in the information section and the other has a 1. I don't know if this means one applies to battery 1 and the other to battery 2. In checking on the web I saw a response to the same problem

I do not know if this can be done on the E5540 and if it can, can it be used on just the one Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery or on both? Basically it says should uninstall and reinstall

Yes, uninstalling/and reinstalling the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery could be done on Latitude E5540. Just following the steps in link below to safety uninstall / reinstall the battery driver.

Also, check the status of the Battery Health and AC adapter in BIOS:

1. Power off system.

2. Power on system, quickly start tapping F2 key continuously until you see BIOS setup.

The status of battery health should be listed in Battery Information and the AC adapter should say it type.

And check the status of Battery Settings in the BIOS or in Dell Command Power Manager Application.

Standard - Fully charges the battery at a moderate rate. This setting provides a balanced approach to extending battery life while still providing a reasonably fast charging time. Recommended for users who frequently switch between battery and external power sources.

Express Charge - Quickly charges the battery using Dell fast-charge technology. Recommended for users who need the battery to charge quickly. If the system is powered off, then the battery typically charges to 80 percent within one hour and 100 percent in two hours. Charge time may be longer if the system is powered on.

Primarily AC Use - Extends battery life by lowering the charge threshold, so that the battery never charges to 100 percent capacity. Recommended for users who primarily operate the system while plugged into an external power source.

Adaptive - Automatically optimizes battery settings based on the user's typical patterns. Recommended for users who want to "set it and forget it."

Custom - User selects when the battery starts and stops charging. Recommended for advanced users.

*Peak Shift and Thermal Management:

Peak Shift is an optional feature that reduces power consumption by automatically switching the system to battery power during certain times of the day, even if the system is plugged into a direct power source. After Peak Shift begins, the system will run on battery power until the combined charge level of all batteries reaches a minimum threshold. See Enabling Peak Shift for instructions on how to change these settings. Then, if the system is plugged in, it is powered by the direct power source; however, the battery will not charge until the Peak Shift ends.

Didn’t see my earlier reply so trying again. Not sure where it wemt.

Thanks for all the information. Yes running W10. I will do all the checks you sent first. I have an additional question. In the device manager under batteries I have two listings of Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery . When I go to properties of each they seem to be the same except when I click on the events tab and look at the information section I see Device ACPI\PNP0C0A\1 on one and Device ACPI\PNP0C0A\2 on the other. Do I have to reinstall both listings of Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery or do just one? If so, which one? I do not know if the 1 and 2 refer to two batteries, I only have 1 battery installed.

I would uninstall / reinstall battery drivers one at a time.

1. Uninstall one battery driver

2. Reboot system

Once the computer has rebooted, Microsoft Windows will automatically detect and attempt to reinstall the battery driver. Please check to see if battery is now charging

Disconnect AC adapter.

Remove "Main" battery

Remove Base Cover.

Disconnect the BIOS/Coin-Cell battery.

Connect the AC adapter and power-on.

Boot to OS and then "Shut Down"

Disconnect the AC adapter.

Connect the BIOS/Coin-Cell battery.

Reassemble and test.
