One loud beep could signify a possible CMOS battery problem (though usually 5 beeps for that problem). Does the system boot normally after the beep? If not then also consider a memory issue (although that is generally 4 beeps). In that case try reseating the RAM module/s. Also 1 beep can indicate a BIOS problem which could be a MB or again a CMOS battery problem.
It is definitely 1 loud beep! Unfortunately And unfortunately your answer for the 1 beep is not helpful for me because I have no idea what you are speaking about
Follow @ejn63 instructions as a good starting point to diagnose the possible cause of the problem. Sorry to confuse you with the CMOS battery reference. That battery (coin cell) in the system maintains the time and date and supplies power to the BIOS to retain BIOS settings. This page at HP, ironically, has more information on the CMOS battery purpose.
I read the HP data on the CMOS battery and all the symptoms that are listed I do not have except a horribly loud beep when it starts. It says it completed the review (or something like that). I do also notice that my fan now runs loudly and constantly.

Does the system boot and operate normally despite the loud beep, or does startup halt when that occurs?

Yes, it says it updated but in order for me to continue I need to press the power button (but it doesn't shut down) and then the main screen opens

Run the Dell diagnostics (NOT support assist). F12 at powerup to get in.
Are there any errors that arise (by number: 2000-0133, etc.)?

And one more think....I've had the laptop for years and this reboot/update has never occurred.
