Installing SSD drive on latitude E5530

I have a Samsung 2.5" 860 EVO SATA 6 Gb/s SSD drive that I would like to install into the Latitude E5530.

Before I open the laptop up, does anyone know if physically those drives can be installed in those laptops or is it the wrong size? Also if it is the right size physically will it work with that machine? I just don't know what the current hard drive looks like, it is not my machine.

Hi RanAway,

That shouldn't be a problem. However, I can't guarantee it 100% because that model of drive was never validated on the E5530.

Thank you for all your help.

I spoke with Dell and it turns out that that drive is not compatible with that laptop.

It is a 1 TB and I think the most that I can have is a 256 GB.

Sounds like you got a Dell rep who didn't know what they were talking about.  They may have looked at the largest capacity drive that Dell ever shipped and supported on this system, but that does not mean that larger drives would be incompatible.  The last time there was a hardware-level limitation around drive size was 137GB back in the Windows XP SP1 days when "48-bit LBA addressing" support was required.  Obviously your system supports that since it supports 256GB drives.  The only partial restriction from that point on is that if you use Legacy BIOS rather than UEFI booting, your boot disk can't be larger than 2TB because that's all the MBR partition layout can handle, and Legacy BIOS systems have to boot from MBR disks.

Your 860 Evo SSD will be perfectly fine if you decide to get it.
