j5Create USB-C problem

I have a Latitude 7280 & a BENQ external monitor. I've been trying for about a week now just to connect the two in the simplest possible way. My newest attempt involves the j5 Create JCA379 USB-C to HDMI & USB 3.0 with Power Delivery. I thought this was a good idea because it's a hub-type thing that plugs into USB-C but has USB-C, USB, and HDMI available for use. I thought, using this hub I can then do USB-C to HDMI on the monitor. 

I've updated drivers & firmware. I even went through the process of restarting (I think) all my USB, per Dell Support. 
I believe the monitor and laptop are compatible, because if I just use my USB-C to HDMI cord, the external monitor is good to go. I'm holding out hope for using the hub because I have wireless mouse & keyboard to plug in as well and can really use the additional USB. 

I'm not super great at technology, but I usually do okay. This process has gotten very frustrating. If the issue is that this j5 Create hub just isn't compatible with my laptop or monitor or both, I wish I could just find that info. 

Any help or advice is appreciated. Please be gentle because I am trying not to be a big baby, but also feeling very frustrated.
