Latitude 3590 M.2 Sata SSD Upgrade Problem, Not in Boot Sequence

After you cloned the HDD did you disconnect the HDD before restarting the system for the first boot after cloning? Make sure that Windows Manager is first in the boot sequence. Also when you restart the system, at the Dell splash screen start tapping F12. Then in the boot selection try picking Windows boot Manager or the M.2 drive whichever shows up. If the system boots properly from the M.2 drive then I would guess it is a matter of the boot sequence being incorrect in the BIOS.

It could also be a matter of the BCD being corrupt or missing.

Hi, i re cloned the HDD again and removed it before trying to boot from the SSD, it doesn't detect the M.2 as a bootable drive, there is also no windows boot manager when the HDD is disconnected

The HDD runs in RAID mode but when i change it to ACHI i get a boot error on the HDD

I have changed the bios to ACHI for the SSD and disconnected the HDD but still nothing, says there is no hard drive installed when the HDD is disconnected.

I have nothing showing when i press F12 for the M.2 to boot from just a few options bios menu etc

Anything else that i can try?

@del8oy78  don't change that SATA setting.  Set it to whatever it was before, then boot into your Macrium Reflect Rescue Media and run the Fix Boot Problems routine.  If you didn't create Rescue Media in Reflect before you started this process, go do it now (and the keep it going forward, because as the name implies, it can come in handy).  The Fix Boot Problems routine will register the path to the bootloader on the cloned drive into the UEFI firmware as a boot option.  UEFI booting works very differently from Legacy BIOS booting in this regard.  However, it's strange that your new SSD isn't showing up even in the F12 menu, since THAT list is in fact auto-populated based on detected bootable partitions, unlike the boot options in the BIOS for a system set up for UEFI booting.  Did you make sure to clone all of the source partitions to the destination rather than just your C partition?

If you still have trouble, please post a screenshot of your Rescue environment while both your original and new disks are connected and the "Create a backup" tab is selected, which shows the partition maps of all detected disks.  Rescue supports the PrintScreen key, fyi.  Just press it and then a file save dialog will appear asking you where to store the captured screenshot.

@jphughan it says no active partitions when i run the macrium rescue usb, if i attach my HDD it only lets me choose that drive, i've attached some photos (sorry some are upside down, it wouldn't let me change them) let me know if you need anymore photos of the bios settings etc

@del8oy78  they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and it is.  I'm not sure what you did on that clone operation, but the destination disk clearly doesn't match the source.  First, your ESP partition on the source (the first partition) is required for UEFI booting, but the corresponding partition on the destination appears to have been encrypted with BitLocker judging by that icon?  Even if that's incorrect, it's unformatted.  Either way, that absolutely shouldn't be the case, and not having a usable ESP partition on the destination would absolutely prevent that disk from being bootable and would prevent Fix Boot Problems from fixing it.  Also, for some reason your OS partition and WinRETools partitions were swapped.  If you did the latter deliberately so you could extend the partition later, don't, because Windows might end up creating one after your C drive anyway in the future if that's not where it already is.  Instead, specify custom partition sizing during the clone operation by following this Macrium KB article, specifically Steps 4 and 5.  I'll enhance it a bit given that you're trying to fix an existing mess here:

- In Reflect, select your source disk and click "Clone this disk".

- Select your target disk as the destination.

- Select each partition on the destination and select "Delete existing partition" until it shows as empty.

- Per Steps 4 and 5 in the KB article, drag the source partitions down to the destination one at a time, working left to right.  When you drag down the OS partition, select it in the destination and click "Cloned Partition Properties".  In the Free Space row, change the unit dropdown to MB and then enter "990" in the field, which will mean to resize that partition so there's 990 MB free on the disk afterward, which will be enough for your WinRETools partition.

- Drag down your WinRETools partition.

- Run the clone.  Afterward you might still need to run Fix Boot Problems (I'd recommend having your source drive disconnected at that time), but at least you'll have all the partitions you need on your destination.

@del8oy78  one more thing in addition to my reply above.  Make absolutely sure you boot your Rescue Media in UEFI mode.  The fact that the wizard is talking about an "active partition" makes me think you're booting in Legacy mode, since only Legacy BIOS systems booting from MBR disks use "active" partitions.  UEFI systems that boot from GPT disks don't have that concept, and if you boot your Rescue Media in Legacy mode, it will attempt Legacy BIOS boot fixes, which won't be appropriate for a disk that's set up for UEFI booting.  You can check your boot mode by checking the title bar in your Rescue environment, the horizontal bar way at the top that shows the Reflect version, edition, and Windows PE version.  It will say "[UEFI]" at the very end if the Rescue environment is running in UEFI mode.  If you don't see that, you need to boot your flash drive differently.  When you press F12 during boot to access the one-time boot menu, you might see two groups of options, one Legacy and one UEFI.  Or you might see entries mixed together, with some entries showing a UEFI label.  Your USB flash drive would appear in both categories (or have two entries), and you'd need to select the UEFI version.  Or an easy fix is to go into your BIOS an enable Secure Boot, which prevents Legacy booting entirely so that this mistake can't even be made.

@jphughan  Thanks for the help, it seems to be a problem cloning the first partition, i cloned it again and its still saying it unformatted, i have attached an updated picture from Macrium and i seem to be getting a bitlocker error when i'm trying to clone the HDD, i think this must be whats causing my issue, i've attached a picture of the error

@jphughan i also tried booting from the macruim rescue usb and selected fixboot but i get the no active partition message, i have checked and secure boot is enabled an in UEFI.

@jphughan tried cloning it again and somehow it worked, its now running perfectly off the SSD ,thank you so much for your help and persistence.

What software did you use to clone HDD to SSD?  I installed a Samsung 970 in my Latitude 3590, and I cannot get the Samsung Data Migration to clone (it sees the drives, but stays stuck at 0% cloned).  Can I clone from HDD to SSD with both installed in the 3590?  Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi del8oy! How did you do to fix it? I'm in the same situation. I have a Dell Latitude 3410, I bought a Western Digital Black sn750 se 500gb, and I cloned the HDD to that M2 disk with bitlocker enabled. Do you think that it was the bitlocker that is preventing the PC to boot from the M2? It doesn't show in my boot sequence display. Also, I can't find the Fix Boot problems panel on the Macrium Refflect program. I would really appreciate your help. I've been hours sit in front of the computer trying to figure it out and still nothing at all. Thanks
