Latitude 5540 - Storage Drivers
Hello everyone,
I wanted to share an issue I encountered while attempting to image the new Latitude 5540 laptops that I recently purchased. I have successfully used a WDS imaging server for imaging in the past without any problems. However, when I tried to image four out of the five laptops, they failed to boot, indicating that the hard drive was undetectable. Upon investigation, I discovered that these laptops were equipped with Western Digital SN740 NVMe 256GB SSDs, while the one laptop that imaged correctly had a SK Hynix BC901.
To address this issue, I updated the BIOS from version 1.0 to the latest version 1.3, but unfortunately, the problem persisted. I then attempted to locate the appropriate drivers for the Western Digital SSDs on the Latitude 5540 downloads page, but was unable to find them. Although there was firmware available for the SSD, it did not explicitly mention support for the Latitude 5540 as a platform. Furthermore, the firmware package only contained an .exe and XML file, lacking the necessary driver files for importing into WDS.
I'm reaching out to inquire if anyone knows where I can obtain the drivers for the Western Digital SN740 NVMe 256GB SSDs that are compatible with the Latitude 5540 laptops. Any guidance or assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all for your attention, and I look forward to any suggestions or solutions you may have.

Have you tried using the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers available here?

I did install the Intel Rapid Drivers (V.19.5.1.1040, A02 ) listed on the Dell support page for the Latitude 5540, but the no disk issue persists on any machine running the WD SN740 NVMe drive. Should I use the latest version available? I would assume Dell has specific version they want you to use.

Hi, I ran into the same issue with some newer computers from a different vendor. My eventual fix was to go into the bios/uefi and change the storage settings from RAID mode to nvme/ahci mode. I tried to put the Intel Rapid Storage Tech drivers onto our wds server, but those didn't help.

I am having the same issues with our 7010's with the WD SN740. Especially frustrating because the SSSTC and Samsung drives work fine. Pre-boot we change to AHCI and then PXE boot into WinPE. F8 DiskPart shows no drives available. We even tried leaving them in RAID mode but Task Sequence won't apply the drivers from the DELL CAB, latest drivers. The boot image applies the RAID drivers fine but then on the reboot after the drivers are applied no bootable device can be found. I am putting a ticket in with Dell and will update later.
