Latitude 7290, Advanced Driver Restore missing from Dell Command Update

Latitude 7290

Latitude 7290

The following is something I've been witnessing a lot lately. I do a clean install of Windows on a Latitude laptop and then install Command Update. After doing the required reboot after installing it, the Advanced Driver Restore option, to install a base set of drivers, which should be there, is missing. If I click on Check, to check for updates, updates are found, so clearly Command Update does support these laptops. Up until around six months or so ago, I never experience this issue. But lately, it has been very common.

It's worth noting that if I do a factory reset, rather than a clean, install the Advanced Driver Restore option is available. However, doing a factory reset has some issues. I'm using used laptops and they mostly do no have  SupportAssist OS Recovery installed. When I try to install it via SupportAssist, more often than not, I just get an error and it doesn't install. While I can create recovery media with using the Dell OS Recovery Tool, it only gives me the option to create Windows 10 recovery media, even on systems that support Windows 11. SupportAssist OS Recovery does give me the option to do a factory reset to Windows 11, but as mentioned I usually unable to get OS Recovery to work. If I create Windows 10 recovery media, while I can install the base drivers using Advanced Driver Restore, I also have to upgrade from Windows 10 to 11, which is a hassle.

While no doubt, not being able to use Advanced Driver Restore is most likely something that most people won't care about, it is something I do want to use, as I do specifically want to use the drivers provided by Dell. So as of right now, when I receive a computer with a fresh install of Windows, I will use the OS Recovery Tool to create Windows 10 recovery media, install Windows 10, use Advanced Driver Restore and then upgrade to Windows 11. Which is a hassle.

After some Googling I found a solution, which may help others with the same issue. The Advanced Driver Restore option is now disabled by default for some reason. To enable it, you need to go into settings in Command Update and enable it. However, you need to launch Command Update as an administrator (right click on icon and select Run as administrator), to be able to change any of the settings. When launched as an administrator, you can enable Advanced Driver Restore.
