RQ: Latitude E6440 display compatibility and upgrade?
Hi,
I have E6440 with Radeon GPU and I have upgrade it to i7-4712MQ with 16GB RAM. I love my machine and I really don`t want to replace it, as it`s sufficient for my needs.
However I really need to move to IPS display. In the spec sheet laptop there are two options:
1- 1368x768 with 30pin connector and
2- 1600x900 with 40pin connector.
I have seen same model with 1920x1080 IPS display with 30pin connector and I know that if I have the lower res.display it`s just matter of changing it. But I`m with the 1600x900...
So are they compatible? Is it safe to get the 30pin display cable and the IPS screen and change it.
I know that the cable will fit to the Motherboard as the socket is the same.
Personally I don`t see why not, but as I`m not sure I would rather ask than just risk to damage the motherboard. I have found shop that is willing to provide genuine dell parts, but they can`t help me verify the compatibility, they would just supply the part if I give them the part.no.

You need a display that is compatible with your system - you cannot simply choose one based on the pin count on the LCD connector.
Notebooks are coded to work with the set of screens the manufacturer installs at the factory -- others may not work completely, or may not work at all. Best is to buy from a vendor that knows Dell systems (parts-people.com is one in the US).
Otherwise, you may find the screen does work, but that there's no image until the OS loads if the system's firmware does not recognize the panel.

I`m sure that the display is compatible - I have seen it working in that exact model and spoke with the person to get the part.no. of the display. Unfortunately, I don`t have way to contact him to ask where did he start his upgrade from. Yeah if I was in US - I would definitely spare myself the hustle and contact them, but I`m in Eastern Europe. Here is not so easy to get any kind of reliable info from the official reps... I had spoken with technician of another brand once and I have been told that the parts I`m asking about are not compatible cos the man on the phone was too lazy to even check.. later on I have got proper service manual and those parts were stated as fully compatible... after that I had done the upgrade and everything was straightforward... I have no concerns about the screen if it gonna work properly or not... my concern is - are the cables compatible to each other, and are they replaceable with one another... if they are - than is safe to change 40pin with the 30pin one - that is all I need to know

If you have the Dell part number for the cable and screen, someone may be able to help. Without that, it's all try it and see.
40 pin cables now are usually used for touchscreens, but they were also used with non-touch LVDS cables (likely around the time this system was built). It's also very common for higher resolution screens to require a different cable that, while sometimes having the same pin count, is wired differently.
