Screen corrupts and shuts off

I bought this as a previous display model. The screen corrupts from the bottom and the screen turns a bit of purple at the bottom and after it just shuts off while the computer is still running. Then you have to restart it. It happens randomly and it seems it has to do with scrolling in a window though I am not sure. The os is Ubuntu. Any help?
