Screen Upgrade for Latitude E6420

Can I put the Latitude E5490 1920x1080 14" screen inside my Latitude E6420? If not, is there any alternative things I can do to try and ramp it up to 1920x1080?

From what I see in E6420 specifications and replacement displays at Parts-People, that laptop did not have a FHD (1920x1080) option. As a motherboard is designed to work with only a small number of compatible displays, it's unlikely that that display would work.

No, if your system does not support a FHD display, there's nothing you can do to increase the resolution of a compatible display.

Edit: I also found an old Dell feature sheet on that system, confirming that there was no FHD option. These were the displays that were available:

  • 14.0 HD (1366x768) Anti-Glare LED
  • 14.0 HD (1366x768) LED w/2 finger multi-touch touchscreen
  • 14.0 HD+ (1600x900) Anti-Glare LED

Your only option for higher resolution would be to use an external monitor.

Given the age of the system, while you have it open you should give it a good cleaning, remove old thermal compound and pads and apply fresh thermal compound and pads, and change the CMOS battery.

Whenever touching components or working inside a computer, wear a grounded wrist strap, also called anti-static wrist strap, ESD wrist strap, or ground bracelet. It's a cheap and sensible precaution. Rest the laptop on an anti-static mat or at least a reasonable alternative such as corrugated cardboard. (Repeatedly touching a metal case part is not sufficient mitigation with modern components.)

Here's a post I made about cleaning a 12-year-old laptop. Compressed air would not have removed that sticky dust. I had to disassemble the fan and scrub the blades to remove that dust, and did the same to the heatsink radiator.

Here's a more complete description of how I removed the old thermal compound and replaced it with fresh thermal compound and thermal pads on another old Dell laptop.
