Setting up windows 10 pro on SSD. Won’t boot

I have a Inspiron 5775 laptop that, since updating the BIOS to 1.5.0, can’t get to boot to the SSD as it did previously.

It came with windows 10 home on the HD & I purchased a copy of windows 10 pro which I installed on a blank SSD using whatever is on the DVD, not Dell software. It worked fine up until when I tried to update the BIOS. The Support Assist said it updated, but it didn’t. I tried several times. Looking at the disk structures I found the the SSD didn’t have a EFI partition, which is needed for the BIOS update.

I reinstalled the HD with home & updated the BIOS.

Upon removing the HD & trying to boot pro from the SSD as it had before, it wouldn’t boot. I tried as many things in the BIOS settings as I could but it still won’t boot.

Any idea what else I can do short of clearing the SSD & reinstalling pro?

Second/related question. Is there a way to install pro with an EFI partition? The windows installer overwrites it if I install one before installing pro.

thanks in advance.

peace,
pat

My understanding is that to boot on UEFI mode there has to be an EFI partition on the SSD. As I initially stated, that does not exist. Am I not understanding correctly?

More information on the EFI partition can be found here. Not that this may make a difference but just wondering did you have Bit Locker and/or Secure Boot enabled?

Make sure the system is booting in UEFI mode (i.e., Legacy or CSM OFF and secure boot ON).  Then do the reinstall.

At this point, remove the HDD, put in the SSD, and re-install Windows 10.

What @ejn63  is telling you is that with this re-install, make sure the system is set to UEFI mode and Secure Boot on.

That's part of it, yes -- but you need to install the OS from the flash drive with the system in UEFI mode.

... and keep in mind to press F12 at boot and select the USB under UEFI Boot options!
