Upgrading RAM in E5540

I have a model of the Dell Latitude E5540 with a 4GB ddr3l 1600MHz CAS11 stick in it (I believe). I would like to upgrade the RAM in this laptop and am wondering if I can upgrade to 12gb. If I purchase an 8gb stick with the same CAS and clock speed as the 4gb stick already in the laptop could I populate the empty second slot with the new 8gb stick and make the system run on 12gb total?

Thank you

@RalphParker

Pulled an E5540 from the warehouse for testing.

Used 4GB and 8GB memory:

Total of 12GB memory:

Booted to BIOS and started to load W10.

12GB works just fine.

Thank you so much for you response!

I would really appreciate if you could test it out for me if it's not too much trouble. Buying 2 8gb sticks isn't an option for me right now, but I'd really like to get above 8gb and not end up with an extra 4gb stick that I'll probably end up getting rid of eventually.

Thank you so much!

Welcome to the Dell Community  @RalphParker

12GB is not listed as a valid configuration.

In fact all I can find is that the max is 16GB

Table 3. MemoryFeature Specification

Memory connector two SoDIMM slots
Memory-module capacity per slot
Memory type DDR3 SDRAM 1600 Mhz
Minimum memory
Maximum memory 16 GB

I can pull an E5540 from my warehouse in the morning and test it for you.

But remember to take advantage of "Dual-Channel Memory" you must have matched pairs!!!

That's why most people will purchase matched pairs.
