WD19TBS Dock fan failed

Dell Thunderbolt Dock – WD19TBS

Dell Thunderbolt Dock – WD19TBS

In our company we have about 20 of these docks, and recently we have been having issues with them. (WD19TBS)

On startup, we get the message 'Your dock fan has failed You may experience reduced performance'. This happens on almost all of them.

It is extremely noticeable on teams meeting, when the dock makes a noise like a jet engine as if it is getting seriously overheated.

I have tried everything Dell suggests - updating BIOS, draining power & updating dock drivers but none of these had any affect.

I found an article online which seemed to suggest that because we are using it for charging & two display ports it is causing the issue - but we paid for a dock to use these ports so they should work.

Any suggestions?

 tomSF,

To receive assistance from Dell support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Click the "Get help now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. Provide to them the private Service Tag and all of your troubleshooting.

My company doesn't have the WD19TBS, so take this with a grain of salt. We have also run into issues with our dell Docks mainly being display issues and loss of Video Output in various situations. I'd Recommend the following Steps.

  1. Check the resolution of the monitors being plugged in, if they are pushing over 1080p, that could be too much bandwidth going through the wire.
  2. Check the power adaptors of the docks, sometimes we had found old 130w AC Adapters being used instead of the recommended 180w.
  3. Update the video drivers and any "Critical" driver updates on Dell Support.

Unfortunately, this looks to be a trend with this model, the WD19S ones we have never get loud, and we've only experienced 1 fan failure in the 9 months I've been here.

I experienced this same problem this am and it is a new one for me.  I recently had a T dock replaced and it worked great for a while.  Now, I cannot get my dock to run my monitor nor my usb backup drives.  So I will try all the troubleshooting steps. Hopefully this solves the problem because I do not want another dock from Dell I just want this one to work.
