A whole lot of initial feedback

Since we announced project Sputnik on May 7, we have been deluged with comments and suggestions both on my blog and the Sputnik Storm session and while there were plenty of people who said they would  buy it now if it was available, we also received some clear direction on where people would like to see this offering go.   Some of the key areas for improving the offering are:

  • Multi gesture support for the touch pad
  • Screen resolution
  • More memory (8GB+)
  • Matte screen
  • Pricing: don’t make it more expensive than Windows

We are making note of these suggestions as we plot our way through this six month pilot.

I'm having some major issues with my xps13 sputnik machines (acquired under enterprise account).  the left USB port will not function at USB 3.0 speeds.  Some have submitted on launchpad similar issue (https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell-sputnik/+bug/1213148) and i've been working with Pro support (replace left USB daughter card, replace motherboard, etc.) and now they are giving me a hard time saying only other solution is wait for a BIOS update; which i'm not sure will help.

Barton George or anyone at Dell over there can help???

Much thanks!

thanks for staying on top of things.  unfortunately I realized that my trackpad doesn't work now.  I think when the dell/unisys tech came out he forgot to plug something back (i usually use an external mouse and so didn't notice till now).  Also, unfortunately when the tech replaced my mobo he put my service tag under asset tag (in bios).  I went into the bios and added the service tag into the right location, but now how to get the service tag erased from the asset tag field..  did more research and found a dell utility but it requires a floppy drive (argh!).   Also, while the system was running my personal copy of windows, the tech didn't save the windows activation so now my system needs to be re-activated.

-sigh- why can't this just work without going through all the hoops and crazy process...  i'm seriously thinking about going back to thinkpads

I hope the new version doesn't change the screen layout even when going to a matte texture. I'd hate to see a seam between the plastic and the edge of the device. The original screen style is absolutely amazing, I love the rubber insulation strip that goes all the way around, it fixes the issue of any breaks or seams in the place where your eyes are constantly looking. It's something that bugs me about every other laptop of all time, even the amazing Adamo had just occasional bumps around the edge, which provided a break in the visual, which the XPS makes look much smoother.

> isn't *anyone* else bothered by the fact that it requires two hands to hit page up/down?

YES! Thank you! Glad to know I'm not the only one. Dell keyboards have been going downhill for a while. Seems like somebody got a bonus for every key they eliminated.

Dell, in case you are reading this: why in the world did you ever get rid of the "menu" key between the right side ctrl and alt keys? That's all we would need. This can easily be remapped to act as a pseudo-Fn key, on either linux or windows. I'm doing it right now with my Asus. PLEASE, next keyboard redesign, it's only one little key, just add it back in. Pretty please?

I'm not thrilled about two hands for Home/End either (use a lot in text editing), PageUp/Down a hassle for reading. Otherwise I like keyboard feel, backlight & large letters on key covers, easy to read. But a way to avoid two-handed screen navigation, yeah, that would be nice.

Related note: anybody else miss some kind of outline for touchpad? I like the matte finish and black on black, but I can't find the edges. Had to tape thin strips of paper along sides of touchpad so I can see & feel edges. Bottom button area I can usually find from edge of keyboard. But some kind of faint outline for touchpad would be nice.
