Yeah, "fall" is vague, considering that "fall" began on September 21st or 22nd? Given a 3-month "season" technically that gives them until December 21st to launch the full program, but it'd be nice if they could at least share a hint like "early November" or something. They're the only ones trying to do this, so I don't see a competitive advantage to not being transparent about a date or whether a hardware refresh is coming.
@pprwf our initial launch for project Sputnik as a product will be in North America and will be happening relatively soon. Once we have succesfully launched the product in one geography, we will be looking a how we launch it globally.
1) the new XPS 13 has been launched in Italy and it seems that it is not possible to have the i7 processor (the old one had this choice)
2) it seems very complicated (and expensive :S) to buy it in US. I have to say that to buy it in US is very cheaper than to buy it in Italy, but with custom duties, shipment and the service for the "receive and ship", it would cost a lot.
So, I will wait for the launch date, in order to see the final price and decide what to do.
Barton it would be a very good idea "at least" to have the possibility to buy the laptop without Win 8 in non-US countries, in order to save 50 euro... Or to give a special discount for people that will install the dedicated iso.
Don't worry, despite those bad news, I am still excited about Project Sputnik!
By North America, will this include Canada or just the United States? I am currently going back and forth with considering waiting for the "official" Sputnik laptop or buying a regular one and installing Ubuntu on it... Thanks!
Yeah, I love the idea of this. I use Ubuntu everyday (currently Dual-booting with an Alienware M14x) and would love a proper ultrabook with guaranteed compatibility/driver support and a sleek profile (plus SSD etc.). Lots of people (myself included) need a linux system and don't want to buy an Apple device. But at the moment, the market doesn't seem to cater for this very well.
I'm from the UK and would definitely buy consider buying this as my next laptop if it were sold here.
I see the US release has happened and the Canada release of the XPS 13 has happened.
Unfortunately I cannot buy the Ubuntu system in Canada. Do you know if this is temporary and do you know if there's any way around it? I tried both the US and the Canadian sales support from Dell and can't find a way to buy this yet.
I'm happy to wait if the option to buy in Canada is on the way.
@NMarc the XPS 13 Developer Edition is now available in Canada but the pricing seems to be way out of whack. www.dell.com/.../pd We are currently addressing this. thanks!

Thanks a lot Barton for your information, it is very useful at least to know it will not be released internationally at the beginning.
I'll start to organize myself to buy it in US (I am from Italy) :)

Finally a developer PC with Ubuntu. Great initiative.
I will buy a Sputnik XPS PC as soon as I can get it with a Norwegian keyboard.

Thanks for fixing that price! I was wondering, the XPS is on the enterprise website in Canada... Can I still
buy it even through I am not from a large enterprise?
Thanks!
