Disable tapping, scrolling with Synaptics touchpad on Dell laptops

Question

Hi. I truly need to disable tapping and scrolling. Due to an accident, I have a tremor in my hand and it just destroys everything I do. I have only found info on how to disable the touchpad itself. I need the touchpad to work, I just need to turn off tapping and scrolling. Thank you.

I disabled the tap-to-click annoyance by following the good advice given to me here:

You'll edit the same file discussed in that thread to disable scrolling.

Hi Any suggestions to disable the Alps touchpad on a Latitude D620?  I tried to find the file mentioned in this thread, but I don't see an 'etc' file on my C drive. I've been reduced to taping a piece of cardboard over the touchpad, but it still detects my thumbs through the cardboard.

etc is a 'folder', not a 'file';... look for it that way. (The above is not technically true. Real *nix geeks know that folders/directories are actually a special kind of file, but such knowledge is not going to help you solve your current problem.
