G3 17 3779 - Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

Update: Wifi now works, but the desktop is freezing. See the #2 post.

Hi,

I've got a brand new Dell G3 17 3779 that is shipped with Ubuntu 16.04 and I want to install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on it, but to my surprise there is no WiFi when I boot from the live USB. WiFi works in 16.04. I've had older laptops with no official Linux support at all where WiFi worked in 18.04 so I must say that I'm disappointed that it didn't work with this laptop, but is there anything I can do to get WiFi work on Ubuntu 18.04 with this laptop or should I return it?

I have also had other issues with freezing/unresponsiveness in 18.04, but that seems to have been solved by issuing "acpi_osi=Linux-Dell-Video" to GRUB.

Can you please help me to get WiFi working?

A update with some good and some bad news...

I took the chance to install 18.04, but Wifi still didn't work. Luckily I had a Wifi adapter laying around so that I could update, internal Wifi now works. Hurray! BUT the issue with freezing/unresponsiveness that I thought were fixed is not.

Often the GUI freezes, specially often if I open the settings. Also the keyboard stops working and I can't click on anything with the touchpad. Usually the mousepointer still moves around, but sometimes it locks completely up. I then have to hard reboot, this also causes file corruption (which is fixed with manual fsck on the disk).

How can I troubleshoot the freezing/unresponsiveness?

Edit: Maybe there are a PPA for Dell I will need to add that can help?

First you have to boot or install Ubuntu without nouveao driver:

Grub > press E > Enter at the end of the Linux Line "nouveau modeset=0"

Then install all updates over ethernet. Now everthing is fine. You can also reactivate nouveau.

Sorry for my english.

Hi there, my issue is if i try to connect an additional DELL 27" with 1440p Display to my DELL G5 5587 with ubuntu-budgie 18.04.1 LTS it is not possible. Get no visual on the additional display and my login window on my Laptop Display. dmesg says something like nouveau :gr: FECS falcon already acquired by gr! and gr:init failed, -16 my G5 has IntelHD630&Nvidia1060maxQ... any ideas

Hi, I have the same issue with a freezing Ubuntu (16.04 as well as 18.04.1). Even the magic REISUB keys (with sysreq or print+alt) don't work.

This was the first thing I tried, even with 16.04, but didn't change anything. Ubuntu 18.04 didn't help either. I installed dual boot Windows, which works perfectly fine, so I guess there is some driver issue with either the CPU (I have a 8750HQ) or the GPU (currently using the package nvidia-390 for my NVIDIA GTX 1060 Max-Q).

To enable external display connected via HDMI:

1. Run NVIDIA X Server settings app (should be installed with Nvidia drivers)

2. Go to PRIME Profile setting

3. Enable NVIDIA (Performance mode) mode

4. Restart Ubuntu

Now external display will be working at connecting to HDMI. But will work when you logged in. Before login only internal display works.

Hi, when I bought my  G3 3779, in December 2018, I upgraded Ubuntu 2 times reaching the release 18.10. Now, I am going to upgrade to Ubuntu 19.04. Just Upgrade. Not a clean installation.

I have that GPU enabled in the PRIME Profiles. Yes, it works after the login. But there is a problem.

Firstly, NVIDIA X Server recognizes the external monitor properly as LG Electronics LG Ultra HD 3840x2160. But the Ubuntu Display Setting recognizes it like a Goldstar Company Ltd 27".

The external screen doesn't turn on automatically. I am forced to go to the setting page, enable the "Mirror", and return back to the "Join Displays".

The screen is turned on when the "Mirror" is enabled. When I return to the "Join Displays", the external LG 32" 4K stays on and I use it all day.

Do you know how to manage this particular problem?

Kind regards

G. Aloe

Works with 19.10 :

$ sudo bash -c "echo blacklist nouveau > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia-nouveau.conf"
$ sudo bash -c "echo options nouveau modeset=0 >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia-nouveau.conf"
$ sudo update-initramfs -u
