Intel Core Ultra 7 258V - camera doesn't work on Linux

Hello Dell Community Team,

I am looking for clarification regarding internal camera support on a newer Dell XPS system when running Linux.

Brief system context
..Model: Dell XPS (Intel Core Ultra 7 258V)

..OS: Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS

..Kernel: 6.14.0-1018-oem

Issue description:

On this system, the internal camera does not work under Ubuntu:

- The hardware appears to be detected during boot

- However, the camera is not visible to applications (Zoom, Cheese, etc.)

From a user perspective, the camera hardware seems present, but not usable at the software level.

Comparison with another Dell XPS

I am running the same Ubuntu version on an older Dell XPS 13 (9305). On that system, the internal camera works correctly out of the box, without any special configuration.

This suggests the issue is specific to the newer hardware rather than the Linux distribution itself.

My understanding (high level)

It looks like for modern laptop cameras, full support may depend on additional OEM-provided software components that become available through distribution updates once enablement is complete. On my older XPS, this step appears to have already been done. On the newer system, it may simply not be finished yet.

Why I’m asking

- I don’t use the internal camera often and I do have an external USB camera, so this is not a critical issue. However, I am currently deciding whether to:

- - Keep the laptop and expect camera support to arrive through normal updates in the coming months, or

- -Return it and choose a hardware/software combination with more mature Linux support today

I’m not asking for workarounds — just for clarification of expectations.

Questions
- Is internal camera support for this XPS model under Linux planned or in progress?

- Is it reasonable to expect this to arrive via standard Ubuntu updates?

- If possible, is there any high-level guidance on timing?
