Linux on Inspiron 600M
I installed Mandrake 9.1 on my 600M. I can't get APM to work with the system. Basically, when I try to shutdown my computer, it will stop at "Halting system....... Power down". Afterthat, I must press the power button to shutdown the system. Anyone knows the solution?
Here's the output of "dmesg | grep apm"
apm: BIOS not found.

However, S5 shutdown mode does work with the current acpi patch. Download the linux kernel 2.4.21-rc1 and patch it with the acpi patch from acpi.sourceforge.net. Configure the kernel to allow power management and ACPI, but not apm. Then when you shutdown, it will turn off.

The installation of Mandrake 9.1 on 600m is pretty smooth. However, since the 600m BIOS doesn't support APM, ACPI must be activated. The kernel comes with MDK 9.1 has the acpi support. Just change the lilo.conf to acpi=on (the defaulst setting is acpi=off). You can load battery, fan, processor ... modules. However, the native kernel doesn't support the ID chipset and thus leads to very poor hard drive performance (no DMA). You can download the new kernel from MDK cooker.

I installed RH9 on my 600m. Smooth as, well, silk. My CDs were bad, but installing was fine.
Only problem with Linux on a 600m (Centrino) is that there aren't Linux drivers for the wireless card - yet. Intel is supposedly working on them, but I guess we'll see.

Intel will not release the Wireless Card Drivers for Linux ever.
Someone had a problem with the Secondary hard Drive in Randall Hake 9.0? I couldn't getting working, only the CD and the Floppy

Can you tell me how to set up my X11 configuration for my Inspiron 600m for Red Hat 9? I cannot get it working unless I use the lowest resolution. That is not good for such a high powered monitor on this laptop.
Thanks

hi! i was wondering how you installed mandrake on your insp 600m. I have just finished installing it on mine. It boots normally. I see the messages like "waiting for module dependencies.....[OK]". But when I arrive at the login screen, all i get is a blank screen. How do I fix this? In the installation, i chose the generic flat panel 1000x700( i forgot the exact values) and ati radeon for my graphics driver. There wasn't one for 'ati mobility radeon 9000'.
I really need your help. thanks!

hi! i have just finished installing mandrake 9.1 on my inspiron 600m. I'm dual booting with windows xp pro. the problem is, when i boot into mandrake, i end up with a blank screen. I cannot see the login screen. Although, i can see the boot messages like
finding module dependencies..........[ ok ]
My inspiron comes with ati mobility radeon 9000. When i installed mandrake, the only driver that matches it closest is 'ati radeon'. Not 'ati mobility radeon 9000'. so i chose that one, as it was also highlighted by default. I also chose the generic lcd(flat panel something.. ) with 1000x700( can't remember the exact values ).
How do i solve this? is my lcd in danger? could you guide me through this step by step
