Has anyone installed this update yet, or figured out what's in it? I've just rebuilt my machine for the third time, and with the exception of the sound issue, it's working the way I want it to. I'm wary of installing any ill-defined updates.

Same here.

After fixing the sound issues that came with the latest update it seems risky to install a system package without and more description. Can anybody from the Sputnik team shed more light on the package content.

Does this explain, or relate to, the Alps driver update which was released in the past 12h?

It's in the changelog for the package:

dino2-meta (3) trusty; urgency=medium

* Remove unnecessary alps touchpad driver. (LP: #1584608)
