MPlayer Video Codec to Use?

On my PowerEdge 400SC, I try to run MPlayer and it consistently compains that I am not using the right codec.  I have looked at the codecs available and have tried numerous ones to no avail.  I always get errors.  Which codec do you recommend I use?

I can give more details, but I am hoping someone can just say "the magic codec is..."

There is no such thing as a magic codec. It depends on what codec was used to encode the video file you are trying to watch.

Hi wmeler,

I am using SuSE Linux 9.1; you get the necessary w32codecs for mplayer already as an RPM at http://packman.links2linux.de/?action=128 (it's in german, look at the bottom of the site); otherwise try the codecs at http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html ;-)
