Need information to install linux on my dimension 4550
Hello,
I would like to install Linux on my desktop Dimension 4550.
I am wondering which Linux Distribution I should use. Since Dell is recommending either Suse or
RedHat, I was thinking to install RedHat 9.0.
Is my hardware compliant with RedHat 9.0 ? I had a look at RedHat site but I can not find such an answer. I need to be sure that all components of my Desktop will be supported :
I have a basic Dimension 4550 system + a video card GeForce4 Ti 400 bus AGP 4X + a sound blaster card + an LCD screen E151FPp + logitec wireless keyboard and mouse (provided by DELL also).
I would like to install this Linux version on a second hard disk. For the moment, I just have one hard disk inside my desktop. I would like to install another one and Linux on it. I would like to avoid having two different OS on same hard disk even if this is easily possible. How should I proceed and configurate the boot ?
Also, is there a free version of RedHat 9.0 ?

it is possible to install linux distribution on a harddisk with windows also or on an other disk.
If you never used linux, it is better for you to install suse distribution. It is more more easy than redhat.
the first think you have to do it is to prepare your disk.
If you have only one disque, it is more easy to use partition magic or other software like to reduce your windows partition. Then boot with the first suse cd and install your suse linux.
If you have two harddisk, you can directly boot on the first cd of suse.
If you want to see if all material is ok for linux, you can download the live cd of suse and see if all hardwra run. Normaly all is ok, maybe if you have wireless or special printer, than this hardware don't work directly but it can with sopme manipulation. I can recommand you to see this web site very nice for linux user (but in french) www.lea-linux.org...

Je suis Français moi aussi ! Comme ce forum semblait être supporté par un site aux US, je me suis exprimé en Anglais. En fait, ce que j'aimerais faire est installer linux sur un deuxième disque dur en modifiant au minimum mon installation windows sur le disque principal. Je veux éviter que le loader de linux ne s'enregistre dans le Master boot record de mon disque principal. J'aimerais que Linux soit chargé par le loader Windows NTLDR. J'ai vu plusieurs articles sur le net expilquant qu'il faut créer un fichier bootsect.lnx enregistrant les premier 256 ko du boot sector du disque Linux (contenant un pointeur vers le loader linux) et modifier le fichier boot.ini de Windows. Je ne sais pas si quelqu'un sur ce forum a déjà essayé cette méthode ?
