I run SuSE Linux 9.1 and WinXP SP2 on my Dimension 8300 system and have to say that the performance under WinXP is significantly better than under Linux.
Is it due to the drivers provided by Dell? Is it caused by the prefetch-function of WinXP?
What do you think? Have you noticed similar performance differences?
Is this a generic SuSe 9.1 intall? Personal or Pro?
The problem could be that, during setup, you didn't specify the correct drivers for your video card (are you using vesa?). Perhaps you didn't enter the correct Horizontal/Verticle freq. for your monitor/screen either?
Try running 'glxgears', let it go for a minute, and post the output here please.
It's the Prof. version. I am using the nVidia drivers, I can run, e.g., Unreal Tournament 2004 without problems. Monitor settings are correct.
I always have the feeling that programs start faster in WinXP, that file-operations (copying, moving of files) are done faster although UDMA is enabled on both systems.
Not to mention the time to boot up or shut down the system or the ability to set the system to standby (suspend to RAM) in WinXP.
Which window manager do you use (assuming you run with a graphic interface)?
Which programs do you have running on startup?
All this will make a huge difference. Many people prefer a slimmer window manager over the "comfort blankets" of KDE or Gnome. If you're using KDE (at a guess, since it's SuSE's default), then I agree that it's probably not as fast as WinXP. But I find the advantages of my SuSE (9.3) install over Windows outweigh the lack of speed by far.
Incidentally, I've only just ordered my first Dell, a Dimension 8400, and I'm curious as to how smooth (or rough) the SuSE install will be... watch this space.
