Pro Max 14 MC14250, Ubuntu 24.04 windows freezing/cannot open
I have new Dell Pro Max 14 MC14250. I installed Ubuntu 24.04 and now I face strange issue. When I open some window for the first time (browser, IDE, Slack ...), it just does not open for a long time. It finally opens in a few minutes, and then all subsequent openings are just instant. Also, form time to time, it freezes again, even when in use. Can somebody advise, how to solve this issue? I have top-tier laptop, so this is definitely not caused by low-end hardware. Thank you.
Note: Classic Ubuntu (no-custom) install, so I am testing this basically in clean install.

Hi
Could you try a Live version of Ubuntu?
Also Linux Mint and Debian 13 can run run live, so you check compatibility prior to install.
They may flag any issues.

I am facing the same issue. I also tried Ubuntu 25.10 but there I also experienced freezing windows.

@user_115dae I solved it by selecting AHCI/NVMe instead of RAID in BIOS setup. This setting can be found in Advenced Settings inside BIOS.

@t1141 Did you have to reinstall Ubuntu after switching to AHCI/NVMe?
In the bios I get the warning, that a reinstall of the OS might be needed if I change to AHCI/NVMe, and I want to avoid that if possible.

Yes, reinstall is required. Your current installation is not working properly, since it is installed using different storage technology. You cannot fix it without reinstalling the OS.

That's unfortunate, as I am not 100% sure if it will fix my issues, but involves quite some work.

Just following up on this one - I was also able to fix the freezing issues by switching to AHCI/NVMe.
In my case I prepared for a complete reinstall - but actually my system kept working fine. So far 2 days without freezes.

I ran into the same issue. Apart from apps freezing when launching, I also noticed
Of course all of these indicate disk issues.
For future travelers, if you are comfortable with command line, you can check `sudo dmesg | grep nvme`. You would see a bunch of timeout errors.
Once I changed the BIOS settings, the error was gone.
I did not need to reinstall the OS.
