Problems with Ubuntu 7.04 on Dell XPS M1330

Hi Ignatus, I have tried yesterday the desktop CD of Kubuntu 7.1beta, which worked perfectly on M1330 (NVIDIA). I read about normal Ubuntu being OK as well. Everything works out of the box: wireless, SD card reader,display resolution, the usual stuff, even the media buttons without configuration. The final version comes out in 13 days. HTH: Viktor

Following your suggestion, I have installed the 7.10 version.
Everything goes perfectly well, but the microphone and the hibernation. Ubuntu does not seem to recognize the mic and the hibernation does not work.
Is the same for you?
Any other suggestion?

Sorry, I have not installed Ubuntu 7.1 yet, I have just run the Desktop CD. At the moment I am re-partitioning my 1330 and reinstall vista... Maybe after I get on with Linux. I will let you know if I have a solution later... Viktor

This time I have a tip for you.
To repartition your hard disk you do not have either to remove Vista or use external programs. There is a tool in Vista to create and reduce partitions (Right Click on Computer -> Management (Maybe...I don't know the exact English word cause I have the Italian version of Vista) -> Manage HD.)
But...be careful. If you use this tool after Linux installation, it could damage Linux partitions, thus creating problems with Grub and your computer could stop booting....

Thanks, I am alrady finished, I did a complete overhaul: deleted everything but the Dell utility partition, and created a 100 Mbyte Boot partition (primary), Linux swap, Vista (30 Gbyte), Linux (15 Gbyte), and a 120 Gbyte Data partition (NTFS). I did not want the recovery and the media partitions anyway. I use Paragon HD manager 8.5, this will do the job from under Vista, it is even capable to save the partitions/data/MBR from the whole disk (in case of me wanting to sell the lappy later and put back everything as it was). The main problem with Dell's scheme was that the used all three primary partitions, and limited the size of the extended partition, so if you need more partitions you have to do away with a lot of their things... I have already re-installed Vista with all the drivers, I am writing this email from the new vista install (clean, free from the unwanted Dell software) Good luck with everything: Viktor

l'd love to help, but unfortunately I am not sure what damage the deletion of the 2.5 Gig partition would cause.  This is I think this is the recovery partition or the image to put the original back. Of course these things will not work when you delete them. I would think vista will boot without it. But if your computer is not working, Dell will try to walk you thorough the recovery, and it will not work of course. I would be also hesitant to say (and hesitant to take an opinion from the user forum:-)) whether this will affect your warranty. I tell you what I did: I bought Paragon Hard disk Manager (the newest version - Google it) and backed up my whole harddisk (after I cleaned and uninstalled lots of unneeded software). This will keep all of your original partitions (includinng the funky Dell partitions as well and the boot sector) and whatever happens you can go back:-)). (I am not getting commission from PAragon, BTW.-))
