RedHat Linux on GX520

Hello All
I would like to give Redhat Linux a go at my new GX 520... has anyone tried it? If so which version?

Hi

I have installed Fedora Core 4. The only thing not supported is the Intel 950 chipset with graphics so you have to run VESA. This means no hardware support for OpenGL. Other than that it works fine.

I installed RHEL 4.0 on a new GX520 machine without any issue.  After updating the machine on RHN I get kernel panics.  Anyone have this issue or know of a work-around?

Does it matter whick kernel you run? Try an earlier one or try the non-smp version. Does it make any difference?

I tried the non smp version of the update(2.6.9-22) and get the same results.  The odd thing is the installed version 2.6.9-5 workings without issue.  Initally, I thought it was the LVM2 but I removed the LVM2 and partitioned the disk manually without LVM2 and get the same results.  Have had not response from Dell support on this issue.

Do you have any text from the kernel panic? Maybe we can see where the kernel panics.

No message I'm able to capture.  I'll reboot and write it down and post it but it panics trying to access the hard drive ide0/ide1

Maybe you could set the SATA mode in BIOS. I think you can set it to emulate EIDE.

Appears to be a bug in RHES 4.0U2 SATA driver.  RH verifying that now.  Will let you know when I have a solution.

The information I have received on this issue can basically be summarized up as the hardware that you are currently running specifically the ICH7 controller is fairly new.

During the kernel updates for compatibility's sake there were some workaround's put in place to allow for the ICH7 to work correctly by basically emulating the drives as IDE.

If this server is fairly new and you dont have anything important on the box it is suggested to do a fresh install of RHEL 4 Update 2. It has been stated that these issues do not exist in a fresh install of Update 2 or any future updates.

I downloaded the RHEL4 Update 2 ISO and fresh installed on GX520. System no longer panics on reboot. Ran update without issue also.
