To be honest with you, the screen configuration tool that comes on Ubuntu is a joke at this point. If you installed the nVidia driver, hook up your TV and use nVidia's control panel for changing your display configuration. nVidia's control panel can be invoked by hitting Alt+F2, typing nvidia-settings, and hitting Enter.

Well, this has been the most help I've gotten yet, including phone calls to Dell.

okay, so I did what you said, and nothing came up. Dell sent me this computer with the card already installed, along with the Nvidia CD and Ubuntu 7.10 on CD. I assumed this was just for my benefit, and everything was set up, installed and ready to go, as anyone would reasonablly expect when ordering any computer from Dell. Is it possible that the driver was not installed?

My restrictd drivers window says that "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (latest cards)" is enabled. If I should re-install or install from the CD, what steps do I take. There are many EXE files on the CD, and I cant tell which I should run.

So once you are in nvidia-settings, you will need to:
  1. Turn on the TV.
  2. Go to X Server Display Configuration.
  3. Click Detect Displays.
  4. Click on the second screen and then click Configure.
  5. Select TwinView and click OK.
  6. Change your resolution and play around with the settings. You'd want to clone your display.
  7. Click Apply.
I don't have another display, so I'm telling you what to do from memory and a few steps might be a bit wonky. Hope this helps.

Thanks, but when I type in what you said, nothing comes up. I don't get an error, but I get no new windows or anything.

No, I type in "nvidia-settings", then I hit enter, the "run application" window disappears, and nothing new came up. I minimized Firefox, and there is nothing on my desktop that wasn't there before.

So when you do run nvidia-settings, do you not get something similar to this:

Yeah, it's there and enabled. I did call Canonical, and they were stumped as well. I think they said the binary driver was or was not installed, and when they walked me through downloading it, the program wanted to uninstall something automatically, which I would still need I guess.

They're supposed to be getting back to me sometime.

My apologies for my delay in getting back to you, but it sounds like the nVidia graphics drivers may not be installed. Can you please go to System -> Administration -> Restricted Drivers Manager and make sure that the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (latest cards) is in use? If not, please check the box and follow through with the installation of drivers. Then, try the procedures again. I understand your frustration right now, and thank you for your patience.

I apologize, but I am stumped as well. Try hitting up www.ubuntuforums.org. I am active there as well, but you will be dipping into a much larger pool of users.
